Inside Line Promotions – CONCORD, N.C. (Nov. 8, 2018) – Greg Wilson earned his fifth top-five finish of the season on Saturday afternoon during the World of Outlaws World Finals, which is the final World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series event of the season.
“It was great to be able to close the season with a strong run,” he said. “This year didn’t go as we had planned so to end on a positive note was important.”
Wilson and his Hercules Tires, DNC Hydraulics, Ohio Logistics and Gear Alloy Wheels backed team opened the event at The Dirt Track at Charlotte on Thursday by qualifying 12th quickest in their group for Friday’s event and 19th quickest for Saturday’s race.
Wilson advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race on Friday before the main event was postponed to Saturday afternoon because of the curfew.
“Most of the guys were racing the top, but we were able to get our car to work really well around the bottom,” he said. “At one point we were up to third and the top two were right in front of us in traffic, but then a caution came out. I think we had a shot at winning the race in traffic, but that didn’t play out in our favor.”
Wilson’s charge from 17th to fifth place was the second-most cars passed.
The event wrapped up on Saturday evening. Wilson placed sixth in a heat race before electing not to start the C Main. He then gained a handful of positions in the A Main to close the season by moving forward.
Wilson, who finished 13th in the World of Outlaws championship standings, was honored on Sunday as the inaugural Jason Johnson Sportsman of the Year Award winner.
“It’s a great honor and means a lot for the World of Outlaws to give me the Jason Johnson Sportsman of the Year Award,” he said. “Any time you can be recognized in a positive light it’s special and to win any award with Jason Johnson’s name attached to it is very meaningful.”
