Inside Line Promotions – COLVILLE, Wash. (April 2, 2019) – Chris Schmelzle is running a full season with a series for the first time in approximately a decade.
Schmelzle will tackle the entire Summer Thunder Sprint Series slate in addition to venturing to Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Ore., for the annual Marvin Smith Memorial.
“This is the first time I’ve planned running the full Summer Thunder season,” he said. “It’s the first time since 2008 I’ve run a full season for points. Usually I’ve jumped around and ran where I felt like it. I want to concentrate on a full season for once. The way my work schedule is I can’t run as many races as I’d like to so I’d like to have a carrot, something to chase.”
Schmelzle, who started racing sprint cars in 1997, will kick off the Summer Thunder Sprint Series this Friday and Saturday at Yakima Dirt Track in Yakima, Wash. This will be his first race at the track since placing eighth in September 2017.
“If I could come out of there with a top five one or both nights I would be pretty happy,” he said. “I just want to come out of the box strong and make it through both nights. Right now the focus is to just work on consistency. I’ve had good speed, just not consistent finishes.
“I think my objective for the season is to run in the top three in points. You want to compete for wins. Last year I had good speed, but after sitting out a few years I made some mistakes in the car. I want to optimize my seat time and make fewer mistakes and hopefully a top three in points is where we end up.”
Schmelzle earned a top-five finish during limited action with the Summer Thunder Sprint Series last year. He posted a pair of top 10s with the series in 2017 when he finished a career best 10th in the championship standings despite missing races.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT – Walt and Fran Petersen
“They’ve been supporting me since about 1999,” Schmelzle said. “Walt used to run professional road racing teams in California. They moved to the Northwest and I met them at Skagit Speedway in 1999. We became friends and they’ve done so much for me personally and racing-wise. I told them as long as I have a race car their name will be on it.”
Schmelzle would also like to thank CS Fabworks, Carey’s Auto Body, Rodger’s Racing Engines, Rocket Designs and Naake Suspension for their continued support.
