Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway
BOSS Traditional Sprints And Diehl Autograph Night Bring Racing Back To PPMS
Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway will return to action on Saturday, July 1. Berks/Nickles will present Dollar Dog Night, highlighting Diehl Automotive Driver Autograph Night, a favorite of the race teams and fans alike. During intermission, the race teams will bring their cars on the track, and the fans will get a chance to go on the track and visit with their favorite drivers. On the track, making their annual visit will be the exciting Rick’s Trucks and Equipment Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series for traditional non-winged sprints. Unlike the pure speed of the winged sprints, the non winged variety places a premium on driving ability, and they put on an incredible show on the ultra wide PPMS track. The Sunoco Sportsman portion of the event will feature the 15 lap Dob’s Automotive Star Spangled Spectacular, paying $500 to the winner and at least $100 to all starters, in memory of Karen and Michael Dobnak. Also in competition will be weekly point racing for the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models, Super6 Late Models, Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stocks, Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns, and CruiseAmerica Open Fours. The Twin State Auto Racing Club will be guests of the speedway, with club members admitted free to the grandstands, or half price to the pit area. While the Diehl Super Late Models are not in competition this week due to several major holiday races in the area, they are invited to practice and join the autograph session.
There will not be a racing program at the track on Saturday, July 8. However, the speedway will host the Pittsburgh area portion of national event Lantern Fest. PPMS race fans that wish to attend the event can get a 20 percent discount on tickets by clicking on the following link. https://the-lantern-fest-pittsburgh.eventbrite.com?discount=PPMS20 Use the discount code PPMS20 at checkout.
Racing returns on Saturday, July 15, with Race 2 for the Diehl Automotive Super Series, featuring the Ultimate Super Late Model Northeast Tour for Super Late Models. The race winner will earn $3000, with all starters earning at least $400. The Big Block / Small Block Modifieds will return for their second visit. There will be weekly point racing for the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models and Sunoco Sportsman. The RUSH Modifieds will also be visiting.
Saturday’s event will be the seventh visit by the BOSS traditional sprints, and will be landmark event number 100 for the open sprint division at the track. Two visits in 2012 were won by Andre Layfield and Jack Sodeman, Jr. A pair of visits in 2013 had Tony Beaber and Kirk Jeffries winning. The 2014 visit was canceled by rain and was unable to be made up. Kody Swanson won the 2015 visit, as Dustin Smith won last year. There should be a strong contingent of travelers for the event, as the series will visit Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, PA the night before. The series has completed five events this season, as with Smith leading the way with a pair of wins. Justin Owen, Shane Cottle, and Trevor Kobylarz are single winners. A total of 17 drivers have competed in all five events held in 2017.
With the season nearing halfway mark, point battles are tight across the board. Justin Lamb leads the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Model point standings by six points over Daryl Charlier. Six points might not seem like a lot, but that is the largest lead in any of the divisions that are racing on Saturday. Dave McManus has a one point edge over A.J. Poljak in the Sunoco Sportman. In the Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stocks, Casey Grumling leads Karlee Kovacs by a single point. Ben Anton and Kayla McManus are tied for the Imperial Heights Garage Young Gun division lead. Matthew Rubright has a four point edge over Tom Anton in the CruiseAmerica Open Fours.
The 2017 fuels incentive continues to race on at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. Sponsored by Brian Bazell of Bazell Race Fuels, the fuel incentive program is open to each week to any race team in the RUSH Late Models and Sunoco Sportsman division. To be entered, teams must purchase at least five gallons of fuel at the track to be eligible, plus carry a Sunoco decal. The highest finishing car that is entered and eligible will earn five gallons of the fuel that they purchased.
For all racing programs, the gates open at 5:00 PM, with warm-ups at 6:00 PM and racing at 7:00 PM.
