Logan Wagner tops Sprints At PPMS

It was an exciting night of racing on Saturday night at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway, with four of the five features being run without a caution flag on the ultra wide speedway.  Logan Wagner from Harrisonville was the $2000 winner of the 410 Sprint main event over Sye Lynch.  The Diehl Automotive Super Late Model feature saw Colton Flinner from Allison Park hold off John Mollick for the victory.  A wildly entertaining Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Model feature had Daryl Charlier of Midway making a last lap pass of Mike Reft, to cap a winning drive from starting position 12.  Topping the Sunoco Sportsman race was Jason Fosnaught from Tarentum, as the RUSH Modified feature went to Rocky Kugel from East Liverpool, OH.

Ten 410 winged Sprints started the 20 lap main event, with Sye Lynch and Carl Bowser leading the field on the starting grid.  Lynch grabbed the lead at the start, as fifth starting Gary Kriess quickly advanced to second.  Kriess made the move on the inside to take the lead on lap 2.  Logan Wagner was running third, and was getting faster as the halfway mark approached.  Wagner took second from Lynch on lap 9, and on lap 11 blasted by Kriess to take over the race lead.  Lynch passed Kriess for second with five laps remaining, and closed on the race leader.  Lynch made a strong inside bid to take the lead on the final lap, but it was Wagner getting the win by .228 second over Lynch.  Bowser made a late charge, taking third from Kriess with two laps remaining.  Kriess was fourth, with fifth going to Dylan Cisney.  Heat race winners were Bowser and Ralph Engel, Jr.

Colton Flinner and John Mollick led the 25 lap Diehl Automotive Super Late Model feature to the green flag with Flinner taking the lead at the start.  Mollick felt a challenge for second from John Flinner and Tony Musolino in the early laps, but by lap 4 he had cleared the completion for second and moved in to challenge the leader.  Unable to pass, Flinner nosed ahead as the battle was for third between John Flinner and Musolino.  Musolino finally passed Flinner for third on lap 4, but slowed two laps later, exiting the event.  While Colton Flinner’s lead was 1.6 seconds at halfway of the non-stop event, Mollick closed in the late stages, as he was on the leader’s back bumper.  With Flinner using the extreme outside lane, Mollick made several challenges to the open inside lane.  But heat race winner Colton Flinner would be up to every challenge, taking the win over Mollick by .669 seconds.  John Flinner was third, with fourth going to Jon Hodgkiss.  Fifth went to Chris Lander.

The 20 lap Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Model feature started with Jake Gunn and Bill Kessler on the front row, as the redraw for the top 12 positions had heat race winners John Mollick and Daryl Charlier in row 6.  Third starting Mike Reft passed Gunn off of turn four to lead lap 1.  With Reft low and Gunn high, they waged a side by side battle for the lead with Reft finally nosing ahead on lap 5.  Sixth starting Justin Lamb had advanced to third, and moved inside of Gunn on lap 6.  By halfway, Lamb moved inside of Reft as they would battle side by side for the lead.  Charlier from 12th joined the lead battle on lap 13, but the intense battle for the lead was interrupted on lap 14 as the first caution flag of the race appeared.  Back to green, with Reft high and Lamb low, their battle for the lead continued to rage.  Reft led lap 18 by .019 seconds, but the second yellow flag of the race came out to set up a two lap dash to the finish.  Reft controlled the restart, but his challenger was now Charlier.  As they took the white flag, Charlier dove inside of Reft entering turn one, making the pass to take the win by .410 seconds over Reft.  Mollick completed his charge from eleventh to get third, with Lamb fourth and Gunn fifth.

Jason Fosnaught drove to victory in the non-stop 15 lap Sunoco Sportsman feature.  Not long after winning in the RUSH Late Models, Daryl Charlier started from the pole position as a substitute driver of the Nick Kocuba 10, and grabbed the lead at the start.  Third starting Fosnaught had other ideas, as using the extreme inside lane he would power by Charlier to the top spot on lap 2.  Todd Weldon started last in the 12 car field, and took just three laps to advance to fourth place, but his mechanical issues continued as he exited the race at that point.  Once in front, there would be no stopping Fosnaught as his number 73 earned a dominant win by 8.231 seconds.  Dave McManus passed Charlier on lap 4, and raced home second.  Last week’s winner A.J. Poljak advanced from 8th starting spot to get third.  Charlier was fourth, regaining the spot when Danny Rich slowed off the final turn.  Ricky Stigerwald was fifth, as Rich coasted across the line in sixth.  McManus and Charlier took the heats.  The race was run in the memory of Carl Westover, the father of driver Jarrod Westover.  Carl was attending last Saturday’s events at the track when he was stricken by a medical issue, resulting in his passing.  Prior to tonight’s main, his ashes were spread on the front stretch with the field behind them, led by his son.

The 15 lap RUSH Modified feature also went non-stop, with Rocky Kugel distancing himself from the competition on his way to the win.  Kugel started outside of row one with Chas Wolbert to his inside.  Wolbert nosed ahead at the green flag, but Kugel made the inside pass off of turn four to take the lead on lap 1, as he would not be headed.  Fifth starting Kole Holden moved up to battle with Wolbert for second by lap 4.  Wolbert nosed ahead, but Holden closed back in, finally making the inside pass on lap 12 in finishing second.  Seventh starting Kyle Martell passed Wolbert on the final lap to get the third spot, as Steve Slater raced home fifth.  Kugel and Martell were the heat winners over the 14 car field.

Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway will be back in action on Saturday, May 27, as it will be Wahl Family Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing Night, featuring the running of the “Spring Wing Fling.”  The 410 Winged Sprints will return in a two division sprint car event, as the limited sprints of the Alternative Power Sources Allegheny Sprint Tour will be visiting.  There will be regular point racing for the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models and Sunoco Sportsman.  Also in action in feature events only will be the Super6 Late Models, Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stocks, Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns, and CruiseAmerica Open Fours.  For all racing programs, the gates open at 5:00 PM, with warm-ups at 6:00 PM and racing at 7:00 PM.  Follow us on Facebook at @PAMotorSpeedway or on Twitter at @PAMotorSpeedway for timely information updates.  The Twitter account is used extensively on race nights for live updates.  Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway is located west of the city of Pittsburgh, just south of the Noblestown exit of U.S. Route 22, or 170 Kelso Road in Imperial, PA, for GPS purposes.  The track phone is 724-695-3363 on race days, or call 412-279-RACE.  For complete information including ticket information, please visit the track website at www.ppms.com .
