Kids load up with goodies and drivers load up with extra cash on Wieland Contracting night.
08/21/2015 (Auburn, MI) For the first time in about a month, Tri-City Motor Speedway got some sunny clear weather. That was great news to all the fans who came to the races Friday night as they got to see one of the biggest shows of the year. Six different series and 105 drivers fought it out to try and pick up the win and extra cash provided by Wieland Contracting. The big shows on the night belonged to the Late Models and their 40-lap feature event. Also, the spotlight was on the Figure 8 drivers as they had their final chance to show off their skills on their championship night. Even better news for the fans on Friday night was that it was Family and Autograph Night. The fans got to go onto the track and meet their favorite drivers and the kids were able to pick up a bunch of goodies from all the drivers.
The night of excitement started off with the 20-lap Auburn Hotel Bar and Grill Street Stock feature. #11 James Jaenicke would be starting on the pole to begin this race and once that green flag waved he didn’t want to give it up. On lap 10, previous Street Stock winner, #X5 Eric Lake, found some room underneath Jaenicke and took the lead. The race would be full of action packed 3 and 4 wide racing. The final results of the race would leave #7R Dave Newcomb as the winner with #3C Mitch Clements in second. Rounding out the top 5 would be #75 Kenny Keller, #28 Jared Rizer and #67 Ryan Fitzgerald. Heat wins went to #72 Bob Kosha, #21E Dan Engel, Lake and Rizer with the B-Main being captured by Keller.
The next series to hit the track was the Elgin Pro Stocks in their 20-lap feature. #11 Chris Peyerk would lead the field to the green flag and would remain up there for the first quarter of the race. #27 Rob Westergard would find some room on lap six and take the lead from Peyerk. Westergard would lose control of his car coming out of turn two and brought out the caution. The new leader once the green flag waved was #3 Loren Short and looked very impressive up front. On lap 18, The main man in the series and winner of the first heat race earlier in the night, #21 Steven Hilliker would find his way up to the front and pass Short and lead the final two laps to pick up his ninth victory of the year. Finishing in second, heat race winner, #71 Timmy Near, #3 Loren Short, with a very good run finishes third, followed by third heat race winner Rick Spencer in fourth and #11 Chris Peyerk with a good run rounded out the top five.
One of the two main events would hit the track next, as the Hasting Racing Rings Dirt Late Models would battle it out to see who has the best handling car in the 40-lap feature. #41X Jesse Playter would lead the field to the green and would remain up there for a while. On lap 17, making his second appearance this year at TCMS, #34 Herb Reich would find some room and take the lead. He would lead until lap 31 when past winner this year, #5B Brook Brasington would take the lead. The battle for the lead wouldn’t end there. Former Late Model champion and winner of the first heat race, #0X Zack Olger would fight for the lead for the final three laps. On the final lap they raced side-by-side into turn three as Olger pulled off the slide maneuver to come out of turn 4 in front and the drag race to the finish line would find Olger in victory lane to pick up his second win of the year. #5B Brook Brasington would end up in second, followed by third heat race winner and points leader David Hilliker in third, #3 Herb Reich with a good run in fourth and The fastest qualifier during qualifying, #0P Kris Patterson Jr. in fifth.
The Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modifieds would see the track next and in a race that made a huge turn of events in the point race. #53 Nathan Oswald would lead the field to the green. Last week’s runner-up and third heat race winner, #27 Matt Szecsodi would find some room on the bottom coming out of turn two and would lead lap one. Szecsodi would have a good lead until trouble stuck on the track, as point’s leader #20W A.J. Ward would get involved in a four car crash. Ward took his car to the pit area, but the team could not get the car fixed in time and he would be out of the race, finishing in 17th. Once the green flag waved again Szecsodi would continue to lead until lap 12, when #33 Todd Matheson would make some room and take the lead. He would hold the lead conformably until lap 17, when the other driver in the championship run, #7D Myron DeYoung would find some room and take the lead. On lap 18 Matheson would fight back and lead the lap. Again the lead would change back to DeYoung on lap 19 and he would keep the lead after that as #7D Myron DeYoung would pick up his fourth win of the year and take a nine point advantage over Ward in the point’s race with once race to go for the IMCA Modifieds. #33 Todd Matheson would finish in second, #27 Matt Szecsodi in third, first heat race winner Gavin Hunyady in fourth and #38 Mitchell Hunt rounded out the top five.
The Steven’s Cycle Sales Bomber Series would be up next as the heat race winner, #77 Stacie Staszak would lead the field to the green. Point leader #09 Jack Freese would not let Staszak hold the lead for long as he passed her on the outside coming out of turn two. After Freese took the lead the rest of the field could not keep up with him as #09 Jack Freeze would lead lap one and every lap after that for his sixth win of the year. #77 Stacie Staszak would finish in second followed by #10S Mike Schnettler, #21 Andy Koczenasz and #13 Preston Deshano.
The night would conclude with a champion being crowed as the Figure 8 drivers would take the track in their eye closing, heart beating main event. Current points leader and winner of the other two Figure 8 races this year #X5 Eric Lake would find his way into the lead early in the race and after that he just pulled away as he lead the majority of the 24 laps and pick-up his third win of the season in the Figure-8 series, making him a perfect three-for-three on the season and also being crowned the 2015 Figure 8 champion at Tri-City Motor Speedway. #74 Andre Bergevin would finish in second place in the race followed by #0 Ray Derminer in third.
