Inside Line Promotions – HAMLIN, Pa. (July 16, 2019) – As a young race car driver, every time you hit the track it is a learning experience. You take the good with the bad and chalk it all up to gaining valuable laps behind the wheel.

Joey Amantea highlighted three nights of non-wing micro sprint racing action last weekend with an eighth-place finish. The other two nights weren’t as successful.

“They say in racing you are going to have more bad nights then good nights and this week was a tough one,” he said. “It just wasn’t a good showing by any means and it’s one we’d like to put behind us.”

Amantea began his week of racing last Wednesday night at Action Track USA in Kutztown, Pa. After failing to time in the top 18 cars during group warmups, Amantea started the B Main from the seventh position.

In a race that started with multiple wrecks, Amantea struggled to get any momentum going. He advanced as high as fifth on a track that was tough to pass on. Amantea attempted to move up to the high side of the track in hopes of finding speed, but ultimately gave way to cars running the preferred bottom and he came home seventh to miss the A Main.

“I’m notorious at struggling in time trial events and it’s something I need to work on as a driver,” he said. “It seemed like the B Main never could get going as guys were wrecking everywhere. Once things got moving it was one lane around the bottom and I just kind of had to try something and ultimately it didn’t work.”

Amantea headed to Linda’s Speedway in Jonestown, Pa., on Friday hoping for a better showing. The night began with a positive as he drew the pole position for a heat race and was able to stay in front to take the win. With the top four cars redrawing for the feature, Amantea started from the ninth spot.

The team decided to try a loose setup for the feature and ultimately moved forward one position to finish eighth.

“The night started off much better with winning the heat race and we decided to try something different for the feature,” he said. “I don’t know if I can really pinpoint what went wrong in the feature. It was part setup and part driver. But after Wednesday’s struggles a top 10 felt good.”

Amantea then visited Hamlin Speedway on Saturday night. After drawing the fifth starting position in his heat race, Amantea found the track to his liking and advanced two positions to finish third in his heat and qualify to the A Main in the fifth starting spot.

On a track that was extremely racy, Amantea showed speed early and was running in the third position when he clipped an inside tire on the track, bringing out the caution and sending him to the rear. He was able to advance as high as ninth, but a fellow driver blew an engine on the final circuit, causing a three-car wreck that Amantea got caught up in. He was credited with the 14th-finishing position.

“The track was great and I thought we were going to turn our luck around,” he said. “But I hit the tire and wheelied the car and spun out. After that we were moving forward again and we just got caught up in a mess. It was only fitting to end the week like that.”

This week Amantea will be looking to rebound with a return to Linda’s Speedway on Friday night to race in winged micro sprint action and Hamlin Speedway on Saturday for non-wing micro sprint competition.

“Last weekend is in the past and I’m looking forward to two great nights of racing this weekend,” he said. “I know what I’m capable of as a driver and I think it’s going to be a better weekend.”
