Edkin Looks to Carry Momentum into Sportsman 100 with Midway Sealcoating Night Win at BAPS
YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Kenny Edkin has been a little frustrated with his win total and not cracking Victory Lane as much as he’s accustomed to at BAPS Motor Speedway.
A few years ago, he put together a nine-win season. In 2020, he notched an impressive seven wins before slipping back to four a year ago. As for this season, he stood at two with five runner-up tallies that could’ve been better.
The bad news for Edkin is that the season is winding down. Still, there are some big races left and plenty of time to turn things around in the win column.
He got a good start on Saturday night. Edkin carved his way to the front from ninth and passed Matt Ondek to score the win in the 25-Lap BAPS Super Sportsman main event. His third win of the season gave him the division point lead.
“It’s one of those things where you wonder if you can hit your stride,” Edkin said. “I know our team doesn’t have any quit in it, and we’ve proved that time and time again over the last couple of seasons.
“Obviously, the championship is in the back of our mind, but I worry about next week. My thought is if we do the best we can every week, the championship will sort itself out. I don’t believe I’ve ever won a race going into the 100-lapper. I’m hoping to carry this into the 100, which would be another notch in our belt and a trophy on our shelf.”
Eric Walker took the lead at the start of the A-Main, with Daniel John in tow. Ondek ripped past John and disposed of Walker on the third circuit to pace the field for the second week in a row in Super Sportsman competition.
Meanwhile, Edkin was making his way to the front. He followed Russ Mitten before passing him to build momentum on his way through the top five. The first caution of the event on Lap 16 for John Edkin and Shane McConnell didn’t hurt his cause.
The red flag came out on Lap 19 when point leader Tony Jackson got upside down in Turn 2. He was OK, but the misfortune, but the Carlisle driver’s misfortunate allowed Edkin to make up valuable ground.
Edkin wasn’t about to let it slip away. On a Lap 20 restart, the Marysville, Pa., ace uncorked a slider to take the lead from Ondek in Turns 1 and 2 and down the backstretch.
“Matt decided to take the outside on the restart, and the center of the track gets really slick there,” Edkin said. “I know what he was trying to do. He was trying to fire and drive to the curb to drive away from me.
“I knew I had to keep my wheel spin under me, let him fire first, and just be with him going into Turn 1 so I could pull a slider. I knew if I had control of the race and got clean air, I would be pretty good.”
Edkin was good the rest of the way to earn another victory. Mitten also got by Ondek for second late. Mike Enders and Tyler Wolford completed the top five.
In the Wingless Super Sportsman main event, Cliff Brian Jr. had the dominant car and collected the victory in the 25-Lap affair.
Trent Yoder started on the pole and beat Kevin Gutshall through the first two corners to take the lead. He held the spot through the eighth circuit until Brian, who started seventh, surged by to claim the win.
Billy Brian Jr. charged from 12th to second at the finish. Sam Leonard Jr., Yoder, and Gutshall completed the top five for the 22-car field.
The Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Models were also in competition, and Jake Moser stormed from eighth to earn his first win of the season in the 20-Lap main event.
Zach Kauffman led the first two circuits before Charles Potts took his turn at the front. Chuck Schutz slipped past Potts on Lap 7, only to have Kauffman sail by in what was an entertaining battle at the front.
Kauffman appeared to be in control until Moser, who started eighth, methodically made his way to the lead. The East Berlin, Pa., driver led the rest of the way to punch his ticket to Victory Lane.
Kauffman settled for second, with Potts completing the podium. Travis Mease, who started 12th, and Kyle Moser completing the top five.
Sam Rial was back in Victory Lane for the seventh time this year at BAPS Motor Speedway in the Superior Homes Extreme Stock division. Bob Scott Jr., Jordan Fulton, Doug Hoffman, and Brian Rehbein completed the top five.
