Herr Claims $3,000 Dirty 30 Super Sportsman Win at BAPS

YORK HAVEN, PA - Frankie Herr made the decision over the Summer that he wasn’t coming back to the Super Sportsman division next season.

The main reason is that Herr wants to travel around and pick-and-choose his schedule. The Carlisle, Pa., driver also has a desire to get back into the 358 Sprint Car ranks and have fun in his final years.

But before Herr moves on, he has one more goal at BAPS Motor Speedway. He wants to give his car-owner, Bill Devine, his first championship, and Herr took another step in that direction Saturday night.

Herr knew he had the best car and was patient. After losing the lead to Scott Dellinger, he retook the top spot and led the final 10 laps to claim the Dirt Deeds Fab and Repair Dirty 30 at BAPS Motor Speedway.

“This is my last year in the Super Sportsman division, and I don’t really want to retire here,” Herr said. “We talked over the Summer, and we are going to do some sprint cars and do some 358 and maybe some 360 racing.

“The points deal, I don’t like them, but I want to win this for Bill, because he hasn’t gotten one yet. We are going to try like a bugger to get Bill a championship here. Scott [Dellinger] is tough, and all we can do is plug at it every week and see what happens.”

Herr is peaking at the right time. After a disappointing Sportsman 100, the Dirty Deeds team has won the last two shows and holds a narrow 80-point lead over Dellinger in the standings with one point race remaining.

This particular march to Victory Lane wasn’t easy. Herr started third on the grid, but he benefited from Matt Ondek not being able to start the main event because of motor issues.

That allowed Herr to take the early lead over Chase Gutshall, but this was far from a runaway. Super Sportsman 100 champion Russ Mitten was running second and within striking distance of the leader until he stopped on the track on Lap 15.

Still, Herr had to struggle. Scott Dellinger, who started sixth, took the lead from Herr after the restart, and the chase was on for the win.

“You never give up a chance when you get to start up front, and the closer the better,” Herr said. “I saw Russell there, and I thought he was going to be tough, but apparently, something happened.

“Then, Scott pulled up beside me, and there are no gimmies here. I could tell I was a little better getting off the corners than the 30 [Dellinger], and that’s how we stayed with him and were able to pass him.”

Herr didn’t go away and decided to go to the outside of the speedway. He had the better car and pulled the trigger on a pass for the lead on the 20th circuit.

From there, the race belonged to Herr. He led the final 10 laps and took the win by 2.017 seconds over Dellinger. Tony Jackson, Gutshall, and Luke Deatrick completed the top five.

“I didn’t run second too long, and I knew the race was over halfway,” Herr said. “I just got a tick tight after the caution. I don’t know if the right rear cooled down and lost air pressure, or what.

“Scott wasn’t going to give me much room. I guess that’s what it takes when you are leading there, and that’s why I had to be a little patient and enough in front of him off the corner that we had no issues. I guess it worked out in my favor.”

Herr set quick time for the 23-car field with a lap of 16.650 and won a heat race. Mitten and Gutshall were also heat winners. Nate Young was the Mac Tools Hard Charger.

In the Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model feature, Travis Mease took the lead just past the halfway point and went on to score the victory in the 20-Lap main event.

Dan Zechman grabbed the top spot on the initial start and led the first 10 circuits before Mease, who started third, took the lead on Lap 11. Three cautions slowed the leader’s progress, but not enough to change the outcome.

Mease earned the victory by 1.176 seconds over Zechman. Chase Billet, Joey Hoffer, and Ben Whitaker completed the top five.

Jorjie Sweger took advantage of a late caution to score the win in the Gene Latta Ford Central PA Legends presented by Baker Door Company feature.

Seth Kearchner took the lead from Chris Transeau on Lap 9 and looked like he was going to take the win until the caution was displayed on the last lap for Stephen Wurtzer.

Sweger took advantage and slipped by Kearchner and earned the victory by a mere .022 seconds at the stripe. Kearchner, Blaine Leppo, Transeau, and Bill Diehl completed the top five.

Hunter Fulton led the final five laps to capture the 20-Lap Superior Homes Extreme Stock feature event.

Andrew Hogue led the first 12 laps before giving way to Austin Hogue. Chase Rehbein took the lead on Lap 14 before the caution was displayed for Michael Goodwin.

On the restart, Austin Hogue and Rehbein got together. Hogue flipped to bring out the red flag, which also handed the lead to Fulton.

Fulton led the rest of the way for the victory. Patrick McClane, Sammy Rial, Doug Hoffman, and Will Long completed the top five.
