Jackson Puts a Wing on His Wingless Car to Earn BAPS Motor Speedway Victory
YORK HAVEN, PA - Tony Jackson had some uncertainty when he rolled into BAPS Motor Speedway Saturday night.
The Carlisle, Pa., driver crashed during his heat race the week before, which put his team behind heading into CH Recovery Features Only Night. Considering Jackson had to use his wingless car for the first time at the speedway, he didn’t know what to expect.
It didn’t matter. Jackson was the most comfortable he’s been all season and carved his way to the front to earn the victory in the 25-Lap BAPS Super Sportsman affair. The win was Jackson’s second of the season.
“The team, as a whole, just never gives up on the goals we set no matter what happens,” Jackson said. “I think we also seem to perform better when we have our backs against the wall.”
That’s obvious.
Mike Enders started on the pole and beat Steve Fannasy into Turn 1. The lead was short-lived, however, as John Edkin charged from his third starting spot to the lead by the time the second circuit was complete.
It didn’t take long for Jackson to put his car in the top five. He took fifth on Lap 3 and was running second by Lap 9.
Jackson had plenty of speed and knew what to do with it. He chased down Edkin and took the top spot away by the time Lap 10 was scored.
“I was worried this week with the limited track time with only hot laps and a new car,” Jackson said. “However, after hot laps and with the track conditions, I felt like we would be somewhat close for the feature. We were able to make the right changes and got better as the race went on.”
Scott Dellinger started 10th and took over the runner-up spot from Edkin on Lap 17. He got a shot at the leader after a Lap 22 caution, but Jackson was too good and won the sprint to the stripe by 1.550 seconds.
John Edkin followed Jackson and Dellinger to the finish. Frankie Herr and Enders completed the top five in the main event. Glenn Keller earned Mac Tools Hard Charger honors, advancing from 25th to 13th.
In the Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model feature, Randy Stoudt grabbed the lead on the opening lap and sped away to the easy victory in the 20-Lap feature.
Jennifer Lesher and Kyle Nickolas led the field to the stripe, but it was Stoudt, who started third, taking the lead by the completion of Lap 1.
Stoudt survived three cautions and a red-flag period over the race distance to claim the win by 3.113 seconds. Ben Whitaker, Wayne Pfeil, Jed Latshaw, and Chase Billet completed the top five.
The Gene Latta Ford Central PA Legends presented by Baker Door Company main event featured a robust 32 cars, 11 cautions, and one red flag. Stephen Wurtzer took the win when the 45-minute time limit expired after 18 laps.
Scott Houdeshell took the lead from Choya Young on Lap 2 and appeared headed for a win. That changed with 18 laps down when he spun in Turn 2, handing the lead and the win to Wurtzer, who started eighth.
Seth Kearchner finished second, with Logan Carbaugh, Bob Stough, and Young completing the top five. Wes Alleman was the hard charger, passing 20 cars to finish eighth.
Patrick McClane wrestled the lead away from Andrew Hogue to capture the Superior Homes Extreme Stock event.
The race was scheduled for 20 laps, but it was called at 12 after the 45-minute time limit expired. There were 11 cautions.
McClane started 11th and got by McClane on Lap 8. He led the rest of the way and took the win over Donnie Broderick, Bob Scott Jr., Sam Rial, and Hunter Fulton.
Robbie Carroll charged from sixth to first in two laps and went on to score the win in the 15-Lap Limited Stock feature.
Justin Mong started on the pole and led the first lap. Carroll wasted little time in disposing of the leader and driving away to the 3.820-second win.
A.J. Hoffner, Terry Hartlaub, Ricky Weaver Jr., and Matt Worley completed the top five. Weaver finished second but was put back two spots for rough driving.
