It's 'Back to BAPS' for the Short Track Super Series, this Sunday, July 14

YORK HAVEN, PA – It’s “back to BAPS” for the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco this Sunday, July 14.

The red clay of BAPS Motor Speedway greets the STSS big-block/small-block Modifieds for their only appearance of 2019. And they do it in style!

Sunoco Race Fuels and Insinger Performance present the 18th annual York County Nationals offering $10,000 to win for 50 laps of racing on the four-tenths-mile clay oval! $1,000 will be reserved for the 10th-place finisher, with $400 to take the green flag plus a long list of STSS contingency awards.

The BAPS event was first introduced in 2016 and each year fans have left saying “wow” about the action at the rejuvenated Central PA facility owned by Scott Gobrecht and managed by Kolten Gouse.

A year ago, Matt Sheppard was leading the York County Nationals on lap 17 when he pitted with a right-rear issue. Sheppard was not to be deterred. Restarting from the rear of the field, ‘Super Matt’ thrust back to the lead, winning over Stewart Friesen, Ryan Watt, Ryan Godown and Andy Bachetti.

Erick Rudolph of Ransomville, N.Y., outgunned Friesen on a late restart to win the ’17 edition in his debut at the track. Friesen settled for second, followed by Craig Von Dohren, Jeff Strunk and Frank Cozze.

The inaugural 2016 edition saw New Yorker Anthony Perrego dominate, but a flat tire cost him a shot at Victory Lane. Perrego’s misfortune paved the way for Ryan Godown to emerge victorious over Ryan Watt, Jeff Strunk, Stewart Friesen and Jimmy Horton.

Sunday’s event marks Race No. 5 of the eight-race STSS Velocita-USA South Region presented by Design for Vision and Sunglass Central. Sheppard currently holds the lead in the fight for a $10,000 championship.

The STSS South Region has not been in competition since June 4 at Big Diamond Speedway in Minersville, Pa., a race won by Sheppard from the 21st starting position.

Joining the STSS Modifieds on Sunday cards are the Central PA Legend Cars for a quick-hitting, two-division show.

Pit gates are unlocked at 3 p.m. Grandstand gates open at 4 p.m. The drivers’ meeting is set for 5:40 p.m., with hot laps at 6:20 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.
