Drawing 42 XR Super Series entries, Brian’s fourth-to-second run in his heat positioned him on the sixth row for the opening night feature. With $20,000 on the line, Shirley suffered a flat tire on lap 28 that ended his top-10 run.
For Tuesday’s $40,000-to-win finale, Shirley recorded the fifth-fastest lap in time trial group before placing second in his heat. Carrying a steady pace in the 60-lap feature, Brian raced to a sixth-place finish.
On Thursday, Brian traveled to Tri-City Speedway (Granite City, Ill.) to pilot the Steve Lampley-owned No. 33 entry for the Late Model portion of the Modified Mania Dirt Nationals. Earning the fourth-starting position for the A-Main via a heat race victory, Shirley led laps 9-27 but faded to third when the checkered flag flew. He followed Ryan Unzicker and Jason Feger across the line.
With Friday’s program rained out, Shirley trekked to Peoria Speedway (Peoria, Ill.) on Saturday afternoon for the Illinois State Championship. After topping the 29-car field in time trials with a 12.021-second lap, Brian streaked to a heat race win. Starting the $7,500-to-win A-Main in sixth, Shirley gained four spots in the 100-lap affair to register a second-place finish.
