Camaron Marlar scores $15,000 payday in Lake Cumberland's Hardgrove Memorial

BURNSIDE, Ky. (Aug. 24) — Scoring a popular victory at one of his home tracks, Camaron Marler of Winfield, Ky., raced to a $15,000 payday in Saturday’s 13th annual Harold Hardgrove Memorial in claiming his first career Hunt The Front Super Dirt Series in front of a packed grandstand at at Lake Cumberland Speedway.

Marlar led all 50 laps after starting from the pole, but he had to hold off a determined challenge from Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., in the second half of the race.

Winger spent the first half of the race battling with Terry English of Benton, Ky., for the second spot, but once Winger established himself in the second position, Marlar had pulled out to a two second lead.

When Marlar encountered lapped traffic, Winger closed the gap running the treacherous outside
cushion right against the wall. With seven laps remaining, Winger got a run on Marlar coming off the fourth turn and pulled up to Marlar’s right-rear quarter panel just as the leader drifted up the race track. Good driving by both drivers kept a wreck from taking place, and Winger regrouped to wait for another opportunity.

The caution flag came out with just three laps remaining, and Winger got a run on Marler on the restart. This time Winger took the inside groove, and pulled up to Marler’s door. The leader pulled away down the backstretch, and then pulled away on another restart with three laps to go to take a 1.288 second margin of victory under the checkered flag over Winger.

“I can’t tell you right now just how much winning this race means to me because it’s the biggest race at my home track, and it’s the one I’ve always wanted to win,” Marler said. “I have to apologize to Ashton Winger because I never thought he’d get the run that he did coming off turn four on the outside. That was a pretty close call for both of us.”

Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., made a late race charge to finish third, with English taking the fourth spot, and point leader Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., rounding out the top five. Friday night’s winner at Lake Cumberland Jason Jameson of Lawrenceburg, Ind., was the MD3 Hard Charger of the Race after starting 17th and finishing eighth.

The next Hunt The Front Super Dirt Series event will be on Friday, September 13 with a $10,000-to-win race at Lavonia Speedway in Lavonia, Ga. The race will be live steamed at huntthefront.tv.
