Semenuk’s ESSO Presents Season Championship Night & John Spencer Memorial This Saturday Night
THOROLD, ONTARIO (August 26, 2024) … Semenuk’s ESSO will be presenting the 73rd season championship points night at Merrittville Speedway this coming Saturday night, headlined by the John Spencer Memorial for the Commercial Auto Electric 358 Modifieds.
John Spencer was an up-and-coming racer throughout the region, including Merrittville, Chippawa, Lancaster Speedway (NY), and Buffalo’s Civic Stadium. At the age of 21, Spencer succumbed to injuries following a crash at Stamford Park. In 1954, Merrittville Speedway began hosting the John Spencer Memorial and the race has taken place every year since.
Ridgeway’s Gary Lindberg is closing in on the Commercial Auto Electric 358 Modified track championship. Lindberg has an 86-point lead over “Mr. Small Block” Pete Bicknell, and a 90-point lead over Fred Carleton. The Semenuk’s ESSO/Baron Roofing DIRTcar Sportsman points chase seems to be all wrapped up, as Cody McPherson from St. Catharines, Ontario has a 155-point lead over Adam Leslie, who leads Taylor Vanderzanden by 11 points (-166 to McPherson). Dave Bailey from Hagersville, Ontario is the current Hoosier Stock points leader entering the final points night of the year. Bailey has a 72-point lead over Mark Fawcett, and a 97-point lead over Kyle Pelrine. It is a two-horse race for the RONA/Doidge Building Centre Mod Lites title as Josh Sliter from Port Colborne has a 35-point lead over Thorold’s Brent Begolo. In the Vansickle Pet Valu/PV on the Lane 4 Cylinders, there is a tie for the lead between Niagara Falls driver Ken Hair, and St. Catharines racer Alex Riley. Hair and Riley lead Mason Anderson by 117 points.
Semenuk’s ESSO is a family-owned business located on Highway 20 in Fonthill, right down the street from Merrittville Speedway. A Full-service gas station, one of the only few left in the Region! ATM, and convenience store, Semenuk’s has been a longtime supporter of racing at Merrittville. Make sure you stop in and top off the tank before coming or leaving Merrittville. There will be plenty of giveaways to the fans and drivers throughout the night courtesy of Semenuk’s.
Pit Gates will open at 5pm, with grandstands opening at 5:30pm, and racing will get underway at 7pm on Saturday night.
