Wolfgang withstands Midwest marathon at I-80!!
Cody Morris, GREENWOOD, NEBRASKA (4-6-2012) - Closing in on an hour long main event, one driver in particular did not mind the delays.
In a wild 2012 ASCS Midwest season opening event at Greenwood, Nebraska’s I-80 Speedway that featured six stoppages, including a late race fuel stop, a young star emerged with the first ASCS accolades of his young career.
Bearing a last name that will forever be synonymous with sprint car success, “Little Wolf” Robbie Wolfgang took his own step in adding to the legend.
The young 19 year old endured nearly an hour’s uneven pace of racing and fended off a pair of ferocious Show Me State assaults to his quest for ASCS victory lane.
While pole sitter Jody Rosenbloom nabbed the lap one lead, Grain Valley, Missouri’s Brian Brown shot from 6th to grab the lap 2 lead. However, Brown’s advantage was short lived as Wolfgang found the rubber and powered by on the 6th circuit.
While “Little Wolf” maintained the point, yet another accomplished sprint car ace was charging from the 5th row to offer challenge. Higginsville, Missouri native Danny “The Dude” Lasoski had just dove under nephew Brian Brown for the runner up spot when lap 11 contact between Brown and Rosenbloom resulted in a flat left rear tire for Brown.
With open track ahead, Wolfgang’s pace continued to hold, until an attempted move around a lapped Carson McCarl on the 25th lap went awry, sending “Little Wolf” high up the track in turn 4 and allowing Lasoski the opening he needed to slip by for the lead.
But fate had a sense of irony, as just 1 lap later, Lasoski’s collision with the same lapped entry left both cars stalled for the final stoppage of the main event. The 35 minute fuel window had been surpassed by this time, transforming what would normally be a short caution period into a red flag stop for refueling.
Back in the top spot exiting the lap 26 restart, Robbie Wolfgang put away the final 4 laps in quick order to claim the 2012 Speedway Motors ASCS Midwest Region season opener aboard the Bruce Williams’ owned Sioux Falls Ford, Phillips’ Floors, and Stepping Stone Genetics sponsored 7k.
Gregg Bakker finished 2nd with Rosenbloom accepting show position honors. Lee Grosz and Don Droud Jr. completed the top five running order. Lincoln, Nebraska’s Trevor Grossenbacher advanced 11 spots to finish 7th and Hard Charger honors.
Robbie Wolfgang, Jack Dover, Dustin Selvage, and Davey Heskin each earned heat race victories over the 36 car field, with Jon Again taking B Feature honors over an impressive 20 car B main lineup.
The 2012 Speedway Motors ASCS Midwest Region season opening weekend of action continues and concludes with a Saturday night weekend finale at Nebraska Raceway Park’s I-80 Speedway.
