SOLWOLD SCORES $10,000
Alger, WA (7/22/23) – Saturday night is in the books at Skagit Speedway, and it was another great night of racing!
Trey Starks has been dethroned as the only winner in the KarMART USA Superstores 410 Sprint Car Division and the man who got it done was no other than Jason Solwold. Solwold and Starks have battled throughout the year for wins with Starks always getting the upper hand but not this time. Solwold instead had to battle Willie Croft for the race win but, when the race hit lap traffic on lap 10 Solwold was able to make his move on Croft. After that point Solwold’s car was fast as Croft could not catch back up even through multiple restarts and in-lap traffic Solwold seemed to stay in a different zip code.
“Yeah, I think I actually made a couple right decisions that race,” Solwold said. “We were good early, Willie was down there hogging the bottom in one and two, and three and four wasn’t that great for me tonight. I could keep up on the restarts, but I could keep seeing him getting freer and freer (Croft) and he kept getting up off of two and it was just a matter of time for the slider.”
The Sportsman Sprint Car Division has been a battle all year between Levi Klatt and Eric Fisher but this time it was all Klatt. Early in the race, Klatt showed exceptional patience while riding behind race leader Bill Rude and not forcing an unneeded move early. Rude started to wash up off of the bottom of turn two which allowed Klatt to get his nose under Rude and get by for the lead. Klatt checked out after getting around Rude early and was untouchable from there on out.
“At the start, I was running the top,” Klatt said. “But then I noticed (Rude) starting to miss his exit and I’m like ‘Oh maybe I can nail the bottom and slip under him’ and then he started to really miss the bottom and I just took the opportunity. I was a little far behind to capitalize the first lap and I was like ‘Ah he can’t do it two laps in a row’ and yeah, he did it two laps in a row.”
In the Skagit Aggregate Modifieds Rick Smith found his way to victory lane for the first time this year. Moving up from his seventh-place starting spot Smith worked his way through the field. Then while using the restarts to his advantage, he was able to pick off more spots until he got to the front. Out front he still had to work to hold onto the lead as Geoff Morris hung right on his tail ready to pounce if Smith even slipped up once.
“Just openings opened up, and we got one of those Delaware starts and I kinda got in there in the right spots, and just one mistake by Zane (Miner) there,” Smith said.
