Benedum wins Uncle Sam 30 at Lernerville Speedway
Thursday night found Mike Benedum in action at Lernerville Speedway (Sarver, Pa.) to pilot his Appalachian Minerals No. 25 Late Model for the 15th annual Firecracker 100 weekend. Drawing a stout field of 53 World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series entries for the three-day event, Benedum recorded a sixth-place finish in his heat, sending him into the B-Main for another shot at the $6,000-to-win preliminary feature. The following night for another preliminary feature, Mike timed in sixth fastest in his group before placing fourth in his heat race. Transferring into the B-Main, Benedum streaked to a 10-lap consolation victory, which positioned him 20th on the starting grid for the show. Gaining two spots in the 30-lap affair, Mike recorded an 18th-place finish.
With preliminary results determining the starting lineups for heat races on Saturday, Benedum posted a fifth-place finish before coming in third in his B-Main. Earning a spot into the Uncle Sam 30 non-qualifier feature, Mike charged to the 30-lap consolation victory, giving him the option to pocket the $2,000 payday or tag the tail of the field for the $30,000-to-win Firecracker 100. Electing to start at the back of the grid, Benedum was an early retiree from the 100-lapper on lap 16.
