Schmitz Conquers Silver Dollar for Career Win #1, Moore & Shelby Also Winners
By: Elijah Jones
(July 4th, 2022)…..Racing at the Silver Dollar Speedway on the Fourth of July is a long standing tradition. That was no different this year as a near capacity crowd witnessed the thrills & spills of dirt track racing followed by an amazing display of fireworks lighting up the night sky.
Casey Schmitz took the Checkered Flag in the 30 Lap 360 Sprint Car Main Event in the Clyde Lamar #3C entry. The win was Schmitz’ first career win in a sprint car and it was an emotional win for the Chico, CA driver. He fought back tears in Victory Lane as he shouted with elation and celebrated with his crew. Early in the Main Event Casey passed his friend/mentor Kyle Hirst to take over the race lead. From there he survived numerous caution flags & restarts to secure his first career win. Tony Gomes put together a fantastic run in the Menne Motorsports #75 machine. Gomes crossed the stripe in the 2nd position. Brad Bumgarner had one of the more impressive runs of the night he started 14th in the Feature and climbed through the field & actually had the second position late in the race before falling back into the final podium spot in 3rd in his Family owned #88 entry. Justin Henry finished 4th in his #24 entry, while Chase Majdic completed the top five in the #35m.
The Shelby’s Pest Control Hobby Stocks put on a most exciting Main Event as the leaders swapped position & traded a little bit of paint as well. Early on it was the #69 of Phil Shelby leading the charge. He was pressured by the #11t of Travis Moore though. With just a few laps remaining, Moore took the lead away. Shelby made a run at him in Turn 3 and clipped Moore’s left rear. The contact caused Shelby to spin around, but somehow Moore kept his car pointed the right direction and drove away with the lead. That put the #88 of Scott Rogers hot on his heels. With smoke pouring from the lead car, Rogers pressured him over the final few circuits, but Travis Moore held on to pick up his 19th Career Win at Silver Dollar Speedway, his first though in the Hobby Stock Class. Scott Rogers piloted his #88 entry to a 2nd place finish. Zach Lindgren drove through the field to a 3rd place finish in the #72L. Kyle Allen in the #21A finished 4th, with Toby Merrifield rounding out the balance of the top five in 5th. Hard charger of the night was Bryan Lloyd who started 22nd and finished 14th.
Phillip Shelby remains undefeated in 2022 in B-Modified action at Silver Dollar. He picked up his fourth consecutive Main Event Win holding off a late race run by the #44 of Tyler Rodgers. Shelby’s win was the 13th of his career at Silver Dollar in a B-Mod. Tyler Rodgers late race run at the lead came up just a little short and he settled for a 2nd place finish. Justin Funkhouser continues to impress in 2022. Funkhouser wheeled his #5f entry to a 3rd place finish after having troubles early in the race. Andrew Peckham finished 4th in his #75 entry, while Scott Savell completed the balance of the top five in 5th.
Preliminary competition saw the #75 of Tony Gomes set overall Fast Time 13 Scents Candle Co. Award with a time of 12.088 seconds. Sprint Car Heat Races were won by Casey Schmitz, Chase Majdic, Landon Brooks, & Tony Gomes. The Sprint Car B-Main went to the #55D of Dawson Hammes. B-Modified Heat Races were claimed by Justin Funkhouser & Damian Merritt. Hobby Stock Heats were claimed by Phil Shelby, Willie Horn, & Toby Merrifield.
