Silver Cup Set to Pay Huge Purse; $4,000 to win Saturday Night
CHICO, Calif., February 24, 2022 — The sights and sounds coupled with the thrills and spills of dirt track racing returns to Silver Dollar Speedway on March 4th and 5th with the 40th Silver Cup Race of Champions. This traditional race jumpstarts the 2022 racing season and features two of the most popular racing divisions on the West Coast, the winged 360 sprint cars and Dwarf Cars. The newly formed SLC Promotions, consisting of Kyle Larson, Brad Sweet and Colby Copeland, are excited to usher in a new era of promoting at the famed quarter-mile clay oval Silver Dollar Speedway.
The Saturday night winged 360 sprint car winning driver will earn a staggering $4,000. Both nights, SLC has ramped up the purse. “I think it’s great what they are trying to accomplish, said four-time track champion Andy Forsberg. “I have seen firsthand how hard they have worked, and I know the sprint car teams and drivers are excited to race for more money. With the increased purse, big name teams and drivers are expected to compete. The Dwarf Cars are also predicting a huge turnout of cars and stars to entertain the diehard Chico fans.
This years Silver Cup is in tribute to former promoter John Padjen, who passed away in December of 2021. Padjen and his family started promoting the Silver Dollar Speedway in 1979. Their leadership at Chico spanned over four decades. Throughout his illustrious career, John was inducted in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, won multiple promoters of the year awards, and built the Gold Cup Race of Champions into one of the best short dirt track racing events in the country. On Saturday night of the event, we will pay tribute to the Padjen family with a ceremony on the front stretch. "The Silver Dollar Speedway still exists today because of what John Padjen did over those four decades of promoting," said Brad Sweet of SLC Promotions. "His involvement and dedication to Silver Dollar Speedway is something that we as a group want to build upon and continue what he and his family started all those years ago."
Pit gate opens at 1 PM on Friday March 4th, and 12:30 PM on Saturday March 5th. Teams will need to enter through the Costco area side again, off Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. Pit passes are $45 for one day or $80 for a two-day pass. SLC Promotions is also offering the chance for teams to buy a designated pit stall all year, minus the Gold Cup Thursday through Saturday event, for $150. Teams can pay this fee at the first event.
The grandstands will open earlier than in previous years. On Friday night, the scheduled front gate opens at 4 PM. On Saturday night, the front gate will open at 3 PM. Something new to look forward too on Saturday is a Happy Hour event from 3 PM to 5 PM. It will take place at the beer booth. We will offer a discount on the beer and there will be a DJ to play music. “We hope this will give the fans a reason to come early on Saturday and hang out with other racing fans, said Colby Copeland of SLC Promotions.
Friday night grandstand pricing at the event is as follows, $20 for adults (16 – 61), $15 for juniors and seniors (12-15, 62 and up), $5 for ages (6 -11) and kids five and under are FREE.
