Cox Wins in a Thriller
Chico, CA (Sept 27, 2019) …. The final five laps of the 27th Annual Fall Nationals were as exciting as it gets for winged sprint cars. Shane Golobic and Justyn Cox traded the lead numerous times leading up to the dramatic final lap. Golobic received the white flag first but it was Cox who saw the checkered flag before any other driver. In dramatic style, Cox went to the high side of the speedway to sweep around Golobic and lead the final 100 feet to get the win. It was ten years in the making for Cox who was over the moon excited to get his first career main event win at Chico. “I have dreamed of this moment for a long time, said Cox. “It’s taken 10 years to get my first win at Chico and I want to thank Doug Rutz and his family for giving me this opportunity to drive their car. Not only did Cox win his first race at Chico but he gave car owner Doug Rutz his first California win.
Fifty-one-winged 360 sprint cars lined the pit area at Silver Dollar Speedway for night one. Most are expected back for the Saturday night finale. Fans should also expect some new additions to the Saturday night roster.
Stephen Ingraham deserved the tough luck award tonight. Ingraham led the first 14 laps. While trying to get around Greg Hamilton, the two made contact that sent Ingraham on his side and the red flag was needed. It was a disappointing end for Ingraham who continues to show flashes of brilliance each week. Ingraham won the eight-lap dash earlier in the night.
Golobic finished second and was obviously disappointed. “Lapped traffic wasn’t kind to me tonight and I guessed wrong, said Golobic. Third place went to Willie Croft. “Things went my way tonight on a track that was hard to pass on, said Croft. “If I could be two spots better tomorrow night it would be a major feather in my cap if I could win this one in honor of Stephen.
Andy Forsberg had a ho-hum night. Started third and finished fourth. Ninth place starting Chase Majdic finished fifth.
Two red flags halted the pace early in tonight’s 30-lap feature event. Kyle Offill was nudged into the front stretch wall and took a hard tumble. On lap five, Justin Sanders flipped in turn four. Neither driver would continue.
Kyle Hirst was the hard charger of the night. Hirst started 24th and finished 12th.
Colby Johnson dominated the 15-lap B main event. Transferring with him to the A main were Cole Macedo, Greg Hamilton and Kyle Hirst.
With the large car count, the format called for two C main events. Tyler Thompson won the first C main and Jodie Robinson won the second 12-lap C Main.
Group A qualifying was won by Kalib Henry with a time of 12.407. Group B qualifying went to Shane Golobic at a 11.879.
