Mike Grenert Wins Dwarf Car Main
Mike Grenert was a happy winner last night during the 32nd Mini Gold Cup in Chico. “It’s been a while since I was able to run up front with guys like Wagner and Jones,� said Grenert. “It feels good to get back to victory lane, especially at a track like Chico.� The 22-car main event for the Dwarf Car division was about as good as it can get for dirt track racing fans. Constant lead changes, hard charging drivers with a never give up attitude. Shawn Jones led a decent amount of the race, but his night abruptly ended when trying to go around a car on the high side entering turn three, he drifted off the edge and spun around. This left the race for lead between Ryan Winter, Danny Wagner and Grenert. Starting in the eighth spot, Grenert was a pleasure to watch. He moved up through the field and by lap 13 was in contention for the win. On lap 15 he made the winning move and led the final four laps. Winter finished second. Wagner came home third. Brock Peters had a spirited battle with Ben Wiesz for the fourth spot. Peters held onto the spot.
Kevin Bender grabbed the lead of the B main on lap three and went on to win the 10-lap race. Mack Aceves came home in second. Rick Holbrook and Wade Ehrlich rounded out the top four.
Four heat races were needed with a large car count. Twenty-nine drivers lined the pit area. Grenert won the first heat race. Ben Wiesz looked sharp in winning heat two. Brian Quilty won heat three. Tim Fitzpatrick narrowly beat Ryan Winter to win heat four.
Dwarf Cars return to the Silver Dollar Speedway on April 5th.
