Championship Season Winds Down This Friday
Chico, CA (Aug 22, 2018) …. Championship auto racing at Silver Dollar Speedway ends this Friday night, August 24th. The season long grind culminates with crowning four championship drivers and teams. The on-track racing will feature winged 360 sprints, IMCA Sport Mods, Earl’s Plumbing Hobby Stocks and Street Stocks. All four divisions will also be vying for the perpetual 6ft. Pepsi Night trophy’s.
Pit gate will open at 4 PM for the competitors. Grandstand gate opens at 6 PM each night. Racing is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM. Adult admission on Friday night is $14.00, juniors and seniors $12.00, children $6.00 (ages 6-11) and kids 5 and under are free.
College students with proper identification can get in for $6.00 during all weekly point races.
Auburn’s Andy Forsberg, three-time track champion, holds a slim three-point edge over Chico’s Mason Moore. On paper Kalib Henry still has a mathematical chance of winning the title, but being 17-points behind Forsberg, it would take numerous things to happen for Henry to win. Forsberg has gathered four wins this season during the season long point chase. Moore and Henry both are looking for their first win this season. The best part about Friday night is every time these drivers hit the track, points are on the line. Qualifying, heat race and main event finishes earn points and the better you do, the more points to be had.
While the IMCA Sport Mod championship is wrapped up with Brian Cooper holding a 48-point edge over Tyler Rodgers, nothing has been decided for second on back. Only 16-points separate second through fourth. Rodgers has a three-point edge over Andrew Peckham. Mike Ficklin sits in fourth. Behind them, Damian Merritt holds a two-point edge over Jimmy Ford for the fifth spot.
On a side note, it will great to see Cy Cooper back home. Cy is Brian’s son, who just graduated US Army Boot Camp. Last year, Cy won the Earl’s Plumbing Hobby Stock main event on Pepsi Night. Brian Cooper reported that Karl Pavlic is letting Cy run his Hobby stock. Cy is home on leave until Sunday the goes to Germany for 3 years. Cooper said, “It’s going to be a special night for us. On behalf of the Speedway let me tell the Cooper family how proud we are of Cy and wish him the best as he serves our Country.
Speaking of the Earl’s Plumbing Hobby Stock division “The Derf Jeremy Langenderfer holds a 17-point edge over James West. Each Langenderfer and West have won two main events this season. Colin Ferguson still has a chance to win the title. He is 20-points back of “The Derf.
The Street Stock division will race for the thirteenth time in 2018. It is the most starts out of any division this year at Chico. Corey Hall has dominated to the point that his lead is safe. Hall is 57-points ahead of Gary Newman. What a year for Newman who is 76-years old. At his age, he is still able to battle it out on the track against the younger competitors. Hall has five wins during the season. Consistency has continued to place Richard Workman in the third spot. Fritz Zanker is trying to keep the fourth spot in points. He leads Phil Marino by just five points.
