Hirst Repeats at Chico
CHICO, CA (8-4-17) -Â Paradise driver Kyle Hirst returned to victory lane Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway driving for Roth Motorsports. The win wasn't easy for Hirst who at one point slid up over the cushion in turn four and surrendered the lead to Bud Kaeding. However, Hirst dove to the bottom entering turn one and slid back up in front of Kaeding to regain the lead. Hirst went on to win the 25-lap main event. Sean Becker was in the mix all night long. He fought hard to get around Kaeding late in the race to secure second spot. Kaeding finished third. Andy Forsberg flirted with a top three finish all night but came home fourth. Hirst now has 26 lifetime sprint car wins at Chico. "I almost gave that one away," said Hirst in victory lane. "But I have to thank Troy, Cory and Michael and Dennis and Teresa Roth for giving me all I need to go fast." The race was halted on lap eight when Richard Brace Jr. went for a wild ride in turn three. He walked away but the car was done for the night.
Kaeding and Hirst picked up heat race wins. Becker earned the fast time award by turning a lap of 11.802. A total of 15 cars attended point race 12.
Chico's Tyler Rodgers earned his first career Sport Mod win at Silver Dollar Speedway with an electrifying drive around the famed quarter-mile clay oval. It was a popular win as the fans really got up and cheered for Rodgers as he crossed the line in first. Rodgers was able to survive numerous double file restarts throughout the 20-lap main event. Give credit to Rodgers crew as they had his No. 44 tuned perfectly for the main event. Shane Devolder drove another solid race to finish in the second spot. Phillip Shelby, the current track point leader, finished in the third spot. Scott Grunert ran up front most of the night and came home in fourth. Mark Abouzeid recovered from an earlier spin to finish in fifth. Shelby and Abouzeid were the heat race winners.
In August of 2008, Steve Hammett parked a race car on the front stretch of Silver Dollar Speedway and celebrated the win. It took him almost nine years to get back. Tonight, Hammett won the 20-lap Street Stock main event. He battled with numerous drivers all night. In fact, Brent Lawrence passed Hammett for the lead on lap 15. But on the next lap Lawrence had a mechanical failure and came to a stop. During the final few laps, Hammett held off a charging Phil Marino. Hammett narrowly beat Marino by less than a half-car length at the checkered flag. Hammett swept the night by winning the eight-lap heat race.
Susanville's Richard Longacre made his first appearance racing at the Silver Dollar Speedway a memorable one as he won the Hobby Stock 20-lap main event. The race featured Nick Vidovich and Shannon Collins all racing for the win. The main event was one of the best we had seen all year. Longacre did an incredible job in holding off the rest of the field and picking up his first career win in his first start. Collins snuck by Vidovich for second. James West was fourth. Mike Chase came home in fifth. Vidovich won the first heat. Jeremy Langenderfer won heat two.
