Hirst Claims Win No. 25 at Chico
CHICO, CA (7-28-17) -Â Paradise resident Kyle Hirst picked up win #25 Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway. Hirst slid up in front of early leader Sean Becker during the half way point of the event and went on to get the popular win. Both Hirst and Becker had to navigate through slower traffic which made the 25-lap main event more entertaining. Becker finished in the second spot. Andy Forsberg started third and finished third. Chase Majdic came home fourth. Colby Wiesz rounded out the top five. Michael Ing picked up the Tyler Wolf Fast Time Award in qualifying. It was Ing's first career fast time award at Chico. His lap was a 12.449. Hirst won the lone heat race.
Nick Spainhoward came into tonight's race as the West Coast Sport Mod Tour point leader. Spainhoward showed why he is on top by winning the 20-lap feature event. Twenty-six cars attended tonight's race. The main event featured some incredible racing between some of the best drivers on the West Coast. Shane Devolder battled Jerry Bartlett the last few laps. These two slid each other back and forth. Both displayed amazing car control. Devolder beat Bartlett by less than a car length at the checkered flag for second. Brian Cooper started 18th and finished fourth. That was an amazing run. Cooper began his charge in the semi-feature. Fred Ryland came home in the fifth spot. Tonight's main event featured 22 cars. All drivers should be commended for entertaining the crowd with a great race and few cautions.
Guy Ahlwardt won the action packed 12-lap B main event. Alan Furuta drove a solid race and finished second. Brian Cooper was third. Justin Foux came home in the fourth spot. Bartlett won the first heat race. Spainhoward got the win in heat two. Andrew Peckham got the win in heat three.
Josh King was the class of the field during the 20-lap Dwarf Car main event. King started fourth but quickly moved into the top spot. A lap one accident took out three of the favorites when Shawn Jones, Mike Grenert and Ryan Winter all crashed. Danny Wagner should be commended. Wagner missed the heat race and started 18th in the main event. Wagner methodically picked off fellow competitors and finished second. Jeremy Blackshire and Mike Reeder along with Kevin Bender had a fierce battle for third. Those three were fun to watch and gave the fans a great show. Ben Wiesz was another driver on the charge. Wiesz started 19th and was credited with sixth.
Ryan Winter won the first heat race. Kevin Bender picked up the win in heat two. Scott Dahlgren was victorious in heat three. A total of 20 drivers attended tonight's races.
Only three-winged economy sprint cars showed up for tonight's race. Unfortunately, Wyatt Brown's car didn't respond during the heat race or main event so the class consisted of two drivers Mike Sayre and Mike Ficklin. The main event was as good as it could get with just those two cars. Sayre led the first part of the race. Ficklin ends up spinning out and falls a full straightaway behind. Lap after lap, Ficklin began to catch Sayre. On lap 12, Ficklin not only caught Sayre, but passed him for the lead. The crowd was responsive and really rooted on Ficklin. Ficklin got the win. Ficklin also won the heat race.
Tony Richards ended up back in victory lane tonight. Richards came into the event as the point leader and did an excellent job in winning both the feature and the heat race. Casey McClain has been great all season. Tonight, he finished second in both events. Craig Swim has been a fantastic addition this season the wingless sprints and came home third in the main event.
