Outlaws Look to Start New Gold Cup Win Streak
CHICO, CA (9-1-16) -Â As the final quarter of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series season gets underway the outlaw drivers look to start a new streak of Gold Cup champions. Last year during the 62nd Gold Cup Race of Champions Donny Schatz earned his second Gold Cup championship ending a five-year streak of a native Californian winning. Schatz has been on a roll winning the last four World of Outlaws main events. He currently leads the World of Outlaws point standing and has earned twenty main event victories in 2016. Schatz has been a dominant force at Silver Dollar Speedway winning 3 out of the last 4 World of Outlaws main events at the speedway and looks to become the fifth drive in Gold Cup history to win back to back Saturday night championships.
Joey Saldana the 2007 and 2009 Gold Cup Race of Champions winner looks to add his 8th career main event victory at Silver Dollar Speedway after finishing in the runners up spot to Schatz during last year's Gold Cup. Both Saldana and Schatz are seeking their third Gold Cup title and look to join Jac Haudenschild tied for second on the all-time Gold Cup win list. Daryn Pittman looks for his second Gold Cup crown and his first win at Silver Dollar speedway since winning the 2006 Gold Cup. If he could pull off that victory he would tie Kyle Larson, Jason Meyers, Andy Hillenburg, Schatz and Saldana for third on the all-time Gold Cup win list.
California natives Brad Sweet and Paul McMahan have multiple victories at Silver Dollar Speedway but are still searching for the Gold Cup. McMahan's best finish during the Saturday night finale came in 2010 when he third behind Jason Myeres and Steve Kinser. Sweet's best finish came during last year's event when he finished in 5th. Jason Johnson looks for his first World of Outlaws win since his victory at the 2016 Knoxville Nationals. Johnson finished 15th at last year's Gold Cup and has been strong with two top ten finishes in his last four starts at Silver Dollar Speedway. Shane Stewart has 4 career main event wins at the speedway and looks to improve on his 4th place finish in last year's finale. Stewart won the preliminary night of action last year and looked to be a strong contender for his first Gold Cup Championship.
David Gravel is still searching for his first victory at Silver Dollar Speedway and would love for that to come during the 63rd Gold Cup Race of Champions. Gravel has been strong all season with the Outlaws and looks to improve on his 5th place finish at the 2016 Mini Gold Cup. Other drivers looking to earn their first Silver Dollar Speedway victory include Jason Sides, Logan Schuchart, Jacob Allen, and Greg Wilson. Sides has two career second place finishes on the final night of Gold Cup action and looks to better that by one position this year. Schuchart had a career best 6th place run at last year's Gold Cup and looks to find himself in victory lane this year. Joining all of the Outlaw regulars Jac Haudenschild looks to earn his fourth career Gold Cup Victory. With that victory Haudenschild would maintain sole possession of 2nd on the all-time Gold Cup Race of Champions win list. The World of Outlaw portion of the Gold Cup begins Friday night and will conclude with the Finale on Saturday night.
