Young Guns Look To Fend Off Legends At 59th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions

CHICO, CA (9-3-12) - In most sports, legends gradually drift away from the spot into retirement as the new generation comes in, but in motorsports they are like a fine wine as they simply get better with age keeping the young guns at bay, but this year an extremely talented group of young drivers will look to keep the Gold Cup away from them during the 59th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, CA kicking off on Wednesday, September 5th.

Returning to a fan-favorite three day World of Outlaw format, with the Civil War Series and USAC opening the week up on Wednesday, the worlds most talented drivers are set to embark on the Silver Dollar Speedway hoping to take home the lions share of the $150,000 purse.

Leading the way are Hall of Famers, Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, and the always exciting, Jac Haudenschild with a combined 16 Gold Cups between them.

Kinser, a 12 time champion of the event, enters the 2012 edition of the Gold Cup fifth in World of Outlaws point standings, and is always the sentimental, and fan favorite at this event. With three feature event wins on the season, 'The King' would like nothing more than to kick up No.4 on Saturday night and take home the $20,000 that accompanies it.

The driver known as 'The Wild Child', Jac Haudenschild comes into the Gold Cup looking to take home his fourth trophy from this prestigious event. Driving for Paul Silva a year ago, Haud comes into this weekends event piloting the Mike Anderson No.18H. Haudenschild as been strong in this car as he is fresh off of two top-10's with the series in Skagit, WA.

The hottest driver on the tour currently is Sammy Swindell. Claiming two of the last four World of Outlaws races, Swindell brings his series leading, 11 feature event wins into this year's Gold Cup as he as elevated to third in series standings, and brings his potent Big Game Tree's Stand machine in as an odds on favorite to grab his second Gold Cup.

Though the legends of this sport still seem to be at the top of their game, the next generation of stars has something to say about this year's event led by defending race winner, Kyle Larson.

Larson has shined in 2012 highlighted by a Knoxville Nationals prelim win, as well as a pair of top-10 finishes with the Camping World Truck Series. The 2011 Gold Cup Champion will team with Paul Silva and pilot his Kick-it/Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation machine as they look to keep the Gold Cup in California.

One of the hottest drivers in the world currently, Shane Stewart, will also be on hand to try and slow down the veteran drivers as he pilots the Finley Farms No.77f machine. Stewart as always been a tough competitor at the Silver Dollar Speedway, and the Finley Farms machine has always performed well at the track, so Stewart is a legitimate contender to win one for the young crowd.

A worldwide fan-favorite, Rico Abreu, returns to the scene of his first career Sprint Car win hungry for another win, especially one of this magnitude. Taking a couple months off from his Sprint Car duties, Abreu hit the road with Keith Kunz Racing to pilot one of his potent midgets and picked up three wins while doing so. Earlier this year Abreu scored his first two 410ci wins at the Tulare Thunder bowl, as well as the Calistoga Speedway proving he can win on all sized tracks. Abreu comes in fresh off of an impressive midget win at the Calistoga speedway over the Labor Day Weekend.
