Silver Dollar Speedway Mourns the Death of Justin Phillips
By Troy Hennig
The Silver Dollar Speedway wants to send it’s condolences to the family and friends of longtime speedway Pit Steward Justin Phillips. On Monday, March 12, Phillips passed away at his home. Phillips was 65-years-old. Phillips played many roles at the Silver Dollar Speedway. In the late seventies and early eighties Phillips drove in the stock car division. His love for the dirt track at Chico carried over into the officiating side of things in the mid eighties. Phillips was Silver Dollar Speedways flagman before becoming the official pit steward for the majority of the past 20 years. Phillips was often in charge of running the white board in the back straightway and calling up the drivers for hot laps and racing events. All-in-all, Phillips spent 35-years of his life being involved in one capacity or another at the Silver Dollar Speedway.
Phillips was a well liked, mellow-mannered person. He often showed up with a cup of coffee and a few jokes he would express to me in the pits before each Friday night of racing. Phillips retired from the track a little over two-years ago. He was a tremendous asset during his numerous years of involvement with the speedway and will be sorely missed. During our first point’s race on April 6th, we will have a driver honor Justin by taking a few memorial laps around the speedway and we have plans of dedicating the white board area in memory of Justin with a permanent plaque.
END
