By: Troy Hennig
The tightest points battle in the history of the Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprints Shootout Series heads into Chico this Friday night, May 13. Browns Valley brothers Mason and Cody Myers will lead a battle tested group of drivers as the series gets its second chance racing at the Silver Dollar Speedway. Mason is coming off his win at Placerville Speedway on April 30, while his brother Cody finished second.
The brothers have been a force the last few years racing wingless sprints at Chico, Marysville and following the Joe Hunt Series. “They have always been a spark plug of excitement around the race track and it was cool to see them do so well at Placerville,” said Placerville announcer Bill Sullivan. “What I like about the series is that you never know who is going to win on any given night. It’s that competitive.”
The series is the brainchild of Roger Gleason owner and operator of Joe Hunt Magnetos located in Rancho Cordova. “I am excited about the growth and popularity of the series,” said Gleason.
Mason leads the point standings by just one point over Scott Hall. The racer with the most experience sits third. The Professor Jimmy Sills, recently inducted into the Northern California Racing Alumni, holds down the third spot and is just three points behind Myers. Mason’s brother, Cody, is five points out.
While the top four is only separated by a few finishing positions, fifth is a conglomeration of three very potent drivers. Taylor Simas, Johnny Reeves and defending champion Terry Schank Jr. are all tied in the point standings. “I can’t remember when the series has had this close of a point battle and this much talent in the top 10,” said Simas.
