CHICO, CA (9-7-11) -Â Teenage sensation driver Rowdy McClennon picked up his first Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Shootout Series main event win on opening night of the 58th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions. McClennon led all 20 laps to get the popular win. "I want to thank my crew and family for allowing me this great opportunity to win here tonight," said McClennon in victory lane.
Scott Hall lined up with McClennon on the front row of the 20 car starting, 20-lap main event. McClennon got the advantage at the drop of the green flag. Hall held down the second spot for the first four laps. On lap five Taylor Simas made a move to get around Hall for the second spot. Simas was fresh off his Joe Hunt Magnetos point championship from the previous week. For the next 10 laps McClennon hugged the bottom of the speedway. This was a smart move as the track slicked off a bit and Simas was never able to find any racing room up top. On lap 15 Hall took advantage of a Simas mistake and moved back into the second spot. Three laps later it was Simas who passed Hall again for the second spot. While McClennon was up front and cruising to a win, he was missing a wonderful battle behind him.
Tony Richards was also in the mix. On lap 15, Terry Schank Jr. came to a stop and was down for the night. This lined up the field in a single file fashion. Richards was able to pass Hall on lap 18 and began to work on Simas. Hard charging Ron LaPlant started deep in the field but methodically moved his way up to the top five. Another driver charging through the field was Nick Larson. He started 13 and finished in the sixth spot. LaPlant wound up in the fifth spot.
McClennon led the final two laps with ease. He rolled into victory lane with an excited crew. Simas held down the second spot. Richards did a nice job to finish in the third spot. Hall came home in the fourth position.
Angelique Bell, David Johnson and Cody Myers each won their eight lap heat races.
BJ Martin started the night of by turning the fastest lap in group qualifying at a 14.125.
The wingless sprints return to Silver Dollar Speedway for a make up race after the Silver Cup in March was canceled because of rain. The final two nights of racing at Chico for the wingless is September 30 and October 1.
