Silver Cup Slated for This Weekend
CHICO, CA (3-20-11) -Â The 25th annual Silver Cup Race of Champions is scheduled for this weekend at the famed Silver Dollar Speedway. Starting Friday night, March 25, and concluding on Saturday night, March 26, over $40,000 of purse money will be on the line for the winged 360 sprints, dirt modifieds and wingless sprints. Traditionally this race features big car counts and exciting early season racing.
Pit gate will open at 2pm while the front grandstand gate opens at 5 pm sharp each night. Auto racing is scheduled to start at 6:30 pm each night. Adult general admission for Friday night is $15.00 and $20.00 on Saturday night. Junior and senior ticket prices are $12.00 for Friday and $15.00 for Saturday. Children will be $6.00 for each night. Camping is available at the fairgrounds for $30.00 per night.
Defending champion Roger Crockett will lead a stellar field of top 360 drivers on the West Coast. Crockett held off Robbie Whitchurch and Colby Wiesz to win the 2010 version of the Silver Cup. Friday night main event winner Andy Forsberg is also scheduled to appear. Forsberg has spent most of 2011 on the road with back to back trips to Hanford and Tulare mixed in with races in Arizona. The Auburn native will have plenty of seat time coming into this weekend. The local drivers will be represented by Brett Miller and Sean Becker. Out of town visitors expected to show will include Dan Menne, Mike Henry, Steven Tiner and Herman Klein.
Orland masher Taylor Simas will try to defend last years win during the wingless portion of the Silver Cup. Simas moonlights as a Chico St. student during the week and a semi-professional driver on the weekends. Billy Wallace finished second last year. Coming home third was Terry Schank Jr. In a strange twist of fate, Wallace and Schank Jr. finished in the same two positions the previous night. All three drivers are expected to attend this event. Friday nights win went to upstart Kody Smith. It was a huge win for Smith and his family. Twenty cars raced each night at last year's event.
Missouri driver Eric Turner made his first trip to Silver Dollar Speedway a success by capturing the Saturday night main event. Turner held off a hard charging Alex Stanford. Duane Cleveland finished in the third spot. Ryan McDaniel won the opening night event in the modified division. What a wonderful turnout of drivers last year as 32 teams entered the 2010 edition of the Silver Cup. McDaniels, Cleveland and Mark Abouzeid are all expected to attend this year's race. The best of the best in dirt modified racing will get a rare two-night chance to attack the quarter-mile clay oval.
