CHICO, CA (9-7-09) - When current World of Outlaw point leader Donny Schatz of Fargo, North Dakota leads his traveling group of winged sprint car champions to Silver Dollar Speedway this week, he'll be seeking his second Gold Race of Champions title and the $50,000 that goes along with winning this prestigious short track race. Schatz and crew will hit the mile clay oval located at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights September 10, 11, and 12.
Schatz has won three World Championships in winged sprint car racing, but has strong challenges mounting from Californian Jason Meyers and Indiana driver Joey Saldana. Both have gained momentum in the chase for the championship crown. Saldana is also a former Gold Cup champion while Meyers has captured the Mini Gold Cup on three occasions. Saldana captured the opening leg of the race in Alger, Washington last weekend and Meyers took the $20,000 final night win. The threesome has won 34 races on the World of Outlaw tour this year. Saldana leads the win column with 16.
The challengers do not stop at Meyers and Saldana. The King of the Outlaws, Steve Kinser of Bloomington, Indiana is still active and leads all drivers with 12 Gold Cup wins. He has a total of 24 wins during his career at Silver Dollar Speedway and has racked up nearly 50 top 10 finishes in his career at the high-banked mile oval. He will be joined by his son Kraig in this week's competition.
Defending Gold Cup Champion Jac Haudenschild will seek his fourth Gold Cup title this weekend. The native of Wooster, Ohio has also won the Mini Gold Cup at the track three time during his career and has a total of six wins at the mile.
Returning to action this weekend will be 1981 Gold Cup champion Sammy Swindell of Germantown, Tennessee. 2000 winner, Danny Lasoski of Dover, Missouri, will also be on hand. Former local driver Paul McMahan is also scheduled to compete along with his brother Bobby who won the Silver Dollar Speedway championship this year. Minnesota's Craig Dollansky and Tennessees's Jason Sides are also expected.
Tyler Walker of Los Angeles, Chico's Jonathan Allard, and father and son team Brent and Tim Kaeding are just a few of the local challengers.
