CHICO, CA (9-1-09) - The high-speed excitement of World of Outlaw winged sprint cars comes to Silver Dollar Speedway next week with the 56th running of the Gold Cup Race or Champions. Nearly 100 drivers are expected for this prestigious short track event on the mile clay oval at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in Chico. The California Sprint Car Civil Way series will kick things off on Wednesday night September 9, followed by national World of Outlaws winged sprint car series who'll race Thursday through Saturday September 10-12.

The Gold Cup began it' long span as the California premier short track event at Sacramento's Hughes Stadium in 1950. The race moved to new quarters on the Sacramento riverbanks at West Capital Raceway in 1956. The Gold Cup was expanded to three days in 1975 and went to four days in 1990. Silver Dollar Speedway has been the Gold Cup home since 1980.

Campbell's Brent Kaeding will return to uphold local honors as he seeks the Gold Cup title. Kaeding has won every major sprint car title in Northern California and only has the Gold Cup to add. He has finished second three times, and has countless victories at Silver Dollar Speedway. Kaeding has faced many young challengers and this year is no exception. Chico's own Jonathan Allard has captured the winged sprint car title at Siler Dollar and has captured the "King of California" Golden State Challenge Championship. He and former track champion Sean Becker of Antelope, are the more seasoned young drivers compared to young racing sensations Kyle Larson, Brett Miller, Colby Copeland, and Elk Grove's Kyle Hirst.

World of Outlaw point leader and former Gold Cup champion Donny Schatz of Fargo, North Dakota comes to Chico after capturing the World Series of Sprint car racing, The Knoxville Nationals, for the fourth time in Knoxville, Iowa. The return of World of Outlaw star and multiple Gold Cup champion Steve Kinser of Bloomington will again add interest to this years contest. Add Indiana's Joey Saldana, defending Gold Cup Champion Jac Haudenschild from Ohio, former Outlaw champion Danny Lasoski, and California native Jason Meyers from Clovis for a talent-laden field.

Wednesday night seats are general admission. The ticket box office and front gate open at 5 PM. Racing is scheduled to begin each evening at 6:30. Reserved tickets are available for the World of Outlaw program the week of the event at the Speedway office behind the main grandstand from 9 to 4 and by phone or mail.
