Oberkramer rides high side to capture MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (Sept. 5, 2020) - Mason Oberkramer earned his first career Lucas Oil MLRA feature win Saturday night, picking up $6,000 for his triumph at the Ron Jenkins Memorial Presented by Rugged Radios at Lucas Oil Speedway.
Oberkramer, of Broseley, Missouri, took the lead with 11 laps remaining and then held on in sprint to the finish after a restart with two laps remaining.
"Man, it's been a long time coming for one of these," Oberkramer said. "I've been chasing this track for five years now. Gremlins get me every time. I'm so happy to finally land one."
Oberkramer prize included $1,000 in bonus money from Mary Jenkins, widow of Ron Jenkins who built the original Wheatland Raceway. The winner celebrated by doing dirt donuts in turn four as he approached victory lane.
The high side was the path to victory for Oberkramer, who made an outside pass of Justin Duty coming out of turn four on lap 29. Duty, who led the first 28 circuits, finished second with Chad Simpson third and MLRA points leader Payton Looney in fourth.
Oberkramer said some early contact damaged some sheet metal early in the race and his car became tough to drive, but came roaring to life over the final dozen or so laps.
"I have to thank my parents, my whole family, my friends who help at the shop and (teammate) Tony Jackson and his whole family," Oberkramer said. "Everything was just clicking tonight."
Duty started outside of row one and he got the jump as the race went green, and had up a 1.4-second lead over Oberkramer when caution for debris flew on lap 13. Simpson was running third, Aaron Marrant fourth and Looney fifth.
The top three battled it out as the race continued for a lengthy run of green-flag laps, until Oberkramer sailed around the outside of Duty to take the lead coming out of turn four to complete lap 29.
The high side of the track was a fast - but treacherous place - throughout the 40-lapper with little margin for error.
"Live or die, you know how that is," Oberkramer said of the high groove. "There was a thin line that'll make or break you. Dad was signaling me to the top and that's what I did. I had to get up there and get it done."
Oberkramer had a one-second lead as Duty and Simpson gave chase when a caution for Stovall's spin on lap 38 created drama. That set up the three leaders, fourth-running Looney, for a frantic two-lap shootout.
Oberkramer flawlessly handled the restart and went on to beat Duty by .593 seconds. Duty, of Happy Valley, Oregon, ran second for the second straight time in MLRA action.
"I didn't quite adjust enough," Duty said. "I should have just stayed up top and pounded away. I wasn't sure how long our tire was gonna last, but we had a real good car all night long, start to finish. Overall, I'm happy with second. Mason had a good car and we'll take second."
Simpson, who began the night 120 points behind Looney, called it a solid night overall.
"The race track was really fast tonight and I knew I needed to be up top and I couldn't steer as good as Mason could up there," Simpson said. "He was rolling good on top and got there quicker than I did.
"Mason dropped to the bottom a couple of times and made a lot of hay there, too. He probably had the better race car tonight. We'll work on our stuff and try to get better for tomorrow."
Marrant, a former Lucas Oil Speedway ULMA Late Model track champion, picked up the $500 Slick Mist fast-time award with a qualifying lap of 15.227 seconds. He started fourth in the feature and finished fifth.
The Lucas Oil MLRA is back in action on Sunday night at the Randolph County Speedway in Moberly.
Late pass sends Jackson to B-Mod win: Kris Jackson's fifth feature win of the Lucas Oil Speedway Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod season was hard-earned, as he overcame a sub-par heat race that left him starting the feature 14th.
But Jackson, of Lebanon, quickly worked his way through the field and battled past Andy Bryant with four laps remaining for the lead. He cruised from there to prevail by 1.6 seconds.
Bryant, of Fort Scott, Kansas, started on the pole and beat outside-starting McCowan to the lead as those two ran 1-2 though eight laps. Meanwhile, speedway season champion Jackson worked his way from 14th all the way up to third by lap eight.
Jackson got around McCowan two laps later and was one second behind Bryant when a lap 16 caution bunched the leaders for a restart with nine to go.
After working the inside line as Bryant rode the high groove. Jackson finally took the lead completing lap 21 after Bryant went slightly above the cushion in turn four.
"Andy is one of the top-notch competitors around the top of a race track," Jackson said. "I knew, as hard as he was running, if I could show him my nose enough that maybe I could push him over the (cushion's) edge. I didn't really know, but I was trying.
"Man, 14th to first in a field like that, is pretty neat. That's good for (USRA) national points."
JC Newell finished third with JC Morton fourth and Ryan Gillmore fifth.
Carver earns Street Stocks win: Taylor Carver certainly has stamped himself as one to watch at next month's Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt.
Carver, of Lockesburg in far southwest Arkansas, dropped in for his second win of the season in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Street Stocks main event. Carver beat James Flood by just one one second after dominating the majority of the race before a late caution.
"We came up here trying to get ready for the Big Buck," Carver said of the $10,000-to-win Street Stocks event, Oct. 1-3. "I guess this is the last (Street Stocks) race here until then. We'll be back for that race, for sure."
Carver opened a five-second lead by lap 12 over Fennewald and Frank Escamila. The margin was more than six seconds when a lap 19 caution wiped away that margin and brought Flood onto his bumper for the restart. Flood pressured but could not pull alongside over the final laps.
Johnny Fennewald wound up third with Bob Barnett fourth.

Drag Boats continue on Sunday: The Diamond Drag Boat Nationals on Lake Lucas conclude on Sunday as the Kentucky Drag Boat Association and Southern Drag Boat Association co-sanction the event.
Spectator gates open at 8 a.m. with eliminations tentatively set to begin at 9 a.m.
