Seavey doubles up at Port Royal Speedway

If that’s truly the case, then Logan Seavey’s introduction to Pennsylvania’s Port Royal Speedway is a match made straight out of a storybook.

The Sutter, California’s fairytale racing evening began with him collecting a USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship feature victory on the half-mile dirt oval. Later that night, when he re-strapped himself into a USAC Silver Crown car, the end result was just the same.

However, while the sprint car portion was a relative comfort cruise for Seavey, his subsequent USAC Silver Crown run was anything but.

Seavey led on two different occasions within the final nine laps of the first ever USAC Silver Crown event held at Port Royal, then used a late-race restart with two laps remaining of the 50-lapper to work his way back by Matt Westfall just a half-lap from the finish line while banging the outside guardrail for the majority of the distance to propel him forward off the turns and down the straightaways.

Ironically, it was Seavey himself who may have inadvertently saved his own race. With two laps remaining and trailing Westfall by a car length, Seavey clocked the turn two guardrail three different times, which sheared off his own right rear wheel cover.

With Seavey’s wheel cover sitting right smack dab in the middle of the highline groove near the outside rail in turn two, a debris caution was called, which set up a two-lap dash between Westfall and Seavey.

Westfall led the initial lap following the lap 49 restart by running through the middle of the racetrack while Seavey committed himself to banging off the outside fence up top. Westfall stayed steady and led Seavey by a single car length as the two crossed under Warren Alston’s white flag.

Seavey clipped the turn two wall not once, but twice and possibly three times as he vaulted himself ahead of Westfall midway down the back straightaway. Once Seavey’s rear bumper cleared Westfall’s front bumper, Seavey changed course and headed to the bottom to steal away Westfall’s low line. Both couldn’t quite hold the grip on the bottom in turn three, and both simultaneously drifted up the track surface in synchronicity. Exiting turn four for the final time, Seavey could finally breathe a sense of relief with a mere two car length gap separating each other at the checkered flag.

The third win of Seavey’s Silver Crown career was his most impressive yet as he utilized every ounce of grit he could muster out of his car and of himself to earn the $8,000 winner’s share – minus $100 for the dislodged wheel cover per USAC rules.

Nonetheless, it’s quite clear that Seavey loves Port Royal and Port Royal’s love back to him is requited. Seavey’s sweep of the two features he ran on Saturday at Port Royal made him the first driver to capture main event wins in the USAC Silver Crown and USAC National Sprint Car divisions on the same day since Chris Windom in 2013.

“I knew this was going to be a place I was going to fall in love with,” Seavey noted while basking in the afterglow of victory beside his STIDA.com – Lucas Oil – Legacy Motorsports/DRC/Pink Foxco Chevy. “I have such a good racecar and we really just based it off how we race at Eldora and these cars are really good there. I knew we were going to be good but, actually, I struggled really bad in the beginning of the race, and I was complaining to my crew chief Ronnie (Gardner) under the yellow with 20 to go when I said that I can’t run the middle or the bottom like these guys, so I’m just going to free myself up a little bit and commit to the wall, and that’s what I did.”

C.J. Leary was the epitome of the class of the field early on as he rolled from the pole position to lead the opening 15 circuits, the latter of which he battled lap-after-lap, side-by-side with the ever-pursuant Brady Bacon. Yet, while all eyes were affixed on those two, fourth-starting Westfall was masterfully patrolling the low line as he drove by both and put himself in the lead where he’d remain for the bulk of the race for a total of 26 laps.

Up to that point, Seavey was a bit-player in the mix as he strode in fifth for practically the entire first half-plus until a yellow on lap 30 was displayed for seventh-running Justin Grant who slowed with a torsion bar and shock issue on the right rear, ending his race with an uncharacteristic 21st place result.

Moments later, on the lap 30 restart, Seavey put on his spurs, got on the horse and rode the high side from fifth to second, but Bacon was momentarily able to stave off the pressure and regained third back from Seavey for the time being. Just three laps later, however, Seavey cleared both Bacon and Shane Cottle on the top side to take the reins of the second position.

Digging and digging some more, Seavey made his own personal path on the outside to leap past Westfall on lap 42, but Westfall was able to stick with him as lapped traffic loomed ahead. However, just as the traffic was within arm’s length, sixth-place Jake Swanson’s car came to a rest, spun and stopped, in turn three with seven laps remaining, causing some consternation with Seavey’s bid for victory.

“I hated to see that yellow,” Seavey stated. “All those lappers were on the bottom and that’s where Matt was.”

On lap 45, Westfall found a run on Seavey for the number one spot as he dove under in turn three. Seavey countered back underneath and, suddenly, the two found themselves in unfamiliar positions with Seavey low and Westfall higher entering turn one. Seavey promptly slid up just a tad while Westfall found grip and motored away with less than five to go before ultimately constructing a six-car length lead until the aforementioned caution for Seavey’s displaced wheel cover, which necessitated a final green-white-checkered duel between the two.

“I didn’t know if I was going to have enough there at the end with a two-lap run to get to him,” Seavey admitted. “(Westfall) seemed like he was searching a little bit. I was not searching. I had one goal in mind, and that was to just use the wall to drive around him. There are 22 other guys that would’ve probably run me into the fence on the back stretch, but he left me just enough to bounce off the wall and sneak by.”

It was so close for Matt Westfall (Pleasant Hill, Ohio) as the two-decade veteran of USAC Silver Crown racing came within a half-lap of winning his first career series feature after leading a race-high 30 laps in his Westfall Motorsports/Lynn Cook – Bordner Welding – Lake City Bowl – Ray Marshall Motorsports/Maxim/J & D Chevy. His second-place result ties his best career series result after similar runner-up finishes at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway in 2013 and again in 2021.

It’s now two starts and two podium finishes for Brady Bacon (Broken Arrow, Okla.) during the 2022 USAC Silver Crown season thus far in his Five Three Motorsports/Fatheadz Eyewear – Smith Titanium – Indy Powdercoat/Maxim/Kistler Chevy. Bacon ran inside the top-three for all 50 laps at Port Royal, and the end result saw him finish third for the second consecutive time this season after also scoring a third in May at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.

SEAVEY STORMS TO PORT ROYAL USAC SPRINT GLORY

By Richie Murray, USAC Media (Port Royal, PA) -- This is exactly what Logan Seavey pictured when he first became aware of Pennsylvania’s Port Royal Speedway.

The Sutter, Calif. native had the intuition that the place was just his style, and that his first ever visit to the venue on this night could very well be a special night indeed.

Port Royal was the track Seavey was most looking forward to competing at on the entire schedule and how Seavey visualized it would unfold is exactly what occurred on Saturday night during the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship portion of Open Wheel Madness at the half-mile dirt oval.

Seavey took control for the entire second half of the feature to place a second checkmark into the USAC Eastern Storm win column this week after previously adding a victory on Wednesday night at New Jersey’s Bridgeport Motorsports Park, which ascended him to the top of the Eastern Storm standings and into a tie for the Bubby Jones Master of Going Faster Series point lead alongside Brady Bacon with four of the ten races completed thus far.

“Hammering the guardrail at a big, fast half-mile is tough to beat,” Seavey exclaimed following his second victory of the season worth $6,000 in his Baldwin-Fox Racing/Fox Paving – AMSOIL/DRC/Claxton Chevy. “I knew this is a place I’d pick up quickly and I’d enjoy racing at.”
The victory by Seavey was the eighth of his USAC National Sprint Car career, tying him for 61st all-time along with Mike Bliss, Chet Fillip, Johnny Rutherford and Joe Saldana.

Seavey started fifth on the grid, but immediately dropped to seventh during the opening two circuits before steadily making up ground in the ensuing laps. Pole sitter Briggs Danner galloped out to the early lead and controlled the first two laps before tagging the cushion at the top of turn two on lap three, which packed his right rear wheel full of mud and forced him to the work area for repairs from which he’d recover from to finish 10th.

Fatheadz Fast Qualifier C.J. Leary had set a torrid pace early in the feature after starting 6th, finding his way to the second spot by the end of lap one and then taking over his role at the head of the pack when Danner had his troubles.

Bacon became the first to issue a challenge to Leary for the lead on lap four but was unable to complete the pass. That opened the door for a suddenly surging Emerson Axsom who shot to the bottom and veered past Bacon for the runner-up position and, subsequently, the race lead on lap six in between turns one and two.

The previous night’s winner on the somewhat similar half-mile dirt oval of nearby Williams Grove Speedway was Justin Grant who, while running 7th at Port Royal, slowed with a flat right rear tire on lap six. His car was pushed to the work area where it received extensive help from his crewman Dylan Cook as well as rival Brady Bacon's Dynamics, Inc. Racing crew where it was all hand on deck.

Starting with the lap seven restart, Bacon and Seavey, along with Shane Cottle, zipped by second-running Leary who dropped from second to fifth in no time flat. Bacon closed rapidly on Axsom shortly thereafter and was able to get right to his rear bumper on lap 12 but couldn't make the pass.

The door swung wide open for Seavey at that exact moment, allowing him to rip by Bacon for 2nd with a major slider in turn one. As the new second-place car of Axsom challenged Seavey for the top spot at the halfway point, lap 15, Bacon himself closed in on Axsom for 2nd.

Alex Bright, seemingly out of nowhere for the second-straight night, flew from the 16th starting spot past Bacon for third on the 18th lap and to second on lap 19 by Axsom utilizing a patented Port Royal slide job to accomplish the task at hand. However, Seavey still maintained a sizable, near-straightaway lead over Bright with 10 to go.

Meanwhile, Grant, who restarted last after his blown tire on lap seven, had blown by nearly the entire field as he climbed to fourth on lap 26 with an outside pass of Axsom in turn two, then did even one better on the final lap when he slid Bacon in turn three to secure the third and final spot on the podium.

Up and out ahead of those two was Seavey who made his Port Royal debut an astounding and resounding success as he finished off his first ever appearance at Port Royal with his first trip to victory lane at the scenic venue over Bright, Grant, Bacon and Axsom, while leading by a whopping 5.407 second margin at the finish line.

“I had no idea how big of a lead I had,” Seavey acknowledged. “I knew I had good speed, but I didn’t feel like I was running that hard. I feel like the harder you run, the more you hit the cushion and it kind of eats you up. I had kind of a different line down there in three and four and I noticed it’s pretty flat right up by the wall. I was working that, then I bounced off the wall and turned back down. I was just looking for any kind of grip we could find there. (Crew chief) Ronnie Gardner had this car really, really good.”

Alex Bright (Collegeville, Pa.) endured a blown engine early in the night, then swapped engines in his Hummer Motorsports/Rodota Trucking & Excavating – DriveWFX.com/Maxim/Rider Chevy. Bright unearthed the middle groove and found it to his liking as he experienced near déjà vu from the night before. On Friday night at Williams Grove, Bright earned hard charger honors by driving from 13th to 2nd. On Saturday night, he earned hard charger honors by driving from 16th to 2nd, equaling his best career USAC National Sprint Car finish in the process.

Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.) made a miraculous drive to finish 3rd in the feature after pitting for a flat right rear tire on lap seven which was the result of smacking the fence and cutting his tire down. Grant restarted from the tail and blitzed to a 3rd place finish without the aid of a caution, putting on the finishing touches with a last lap pass of Bacon in his TOPP Motorsports/NOS Energy Drink – MPV Express – TOPP Industries – LA Poly/Maxim/Kistler Chevy.

C.J. Leary’s Fast Qualifying effort to start the program was the 35th of his USAC National Sprint Car driving career, equaling him with Kevin Thomas Jr. and Rich Vogler in that category for the eighth most all-time.

MACRI CHARGES TO THRILLING WINGED 410 WIN AT PORT ROYAL

By Justin Snyder (Port Royal, PA) --Anthony Macri continued his winning ways at the Port Royal Speedway as he held off Logan Wagner and Jeff Halligan for his sixth victory of the season at the Speed Palace.

Tyler Reeser and Tyler Bear led the field to the green flag and it was Bear leading the initial circuit before a caution flew for Blane Heimbach spinning in turn two.

Sixth-place starter Halligan moved into third on the restart, while seventh-place starter Wagner moved into fourth. Fifth-place starter Mike Wagner moved into the runner up spot in the meantime, but a caution flew for Zach Newlin with 18 to go.

Mike Wagner capitalized on the restart and he slipped under Bear for the top spot with 17 laps remaining. Another caution flew for Dylan Cisney, who got upside down briefly on the frontstretch after contact with Justin Whittall.

Halligan moved into the second spot by Bear on the restart, while Macri went from fifth to third as well. With nine laps remaining the top four were all under a blanket and Macri got by Halligan for second on the following lap.

Macri slid under Wagner for the top spot and Wagner tried to come back on the outside coming to the flagstand with six laps to go. However, Wagner ran out of room on the outside and made contact with Macri, which sent him spinning to the inside guardrail.

When the field went back to green flag action, Logan Wagner got by Halligan for the runner-up spot and attempted to slide Macri for the lead but couldn’t complete the pass. Macri went back to the high side of the track over the final five laps and went on to win easily for the $5000 prize over Wagner, Halligan, Ryan Taylor and Mike Walter II.

Whittall, Bear, Reeser, Gerard McIntyre Jr and Dan Shetler round out the top ten. Taylor earned the $500 Valley Supply Hard Charger after advancing from the 16th starting spot while Devin Adams earned the $1000 J&S Classics Warrior Award via random draw of 24.
