Kalamazoo, Michigan (June 11, 2021). Kalamazoo Speedway owner Gary Howe is a hard man to surprise, but Jason Seltzer (Speedway announcer) was able to do just that on Friday night in a short ceremony immediately prior to the Street Stocks taking to the track for the first heat race of the night. Speedway staff received word on June 10 that Howe was a 2021 inductee to the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame. He will be formally inducted at a ceremony in November.

Howe has been involved in stock car racing since he was 15. He earned four season championships at Kalamazoo Speedway during his racing career and earned a permanent place on the Kalamazoo Klash trophy by posting the fastest qualifying time in 1995. He and his spouse, Donna, bought the Kalamazoo Speedway in 2001. Since then Gary has become a leader in short track racing, earning a seat on the Board of the Michigan Speedway Promoter’s Association. His innovations, his stand on safety at the track plus running a clean and consistent race program, have been the subject of many articles in national racing magazines. Since that time the Howes have been honored as Promoter of the Year five times by the Michigan Speedway Promoter’s Association plus they received the National Promoter of the Year Award in 2014 having been a regional finalist on a couple of other occasions.

And then it was on to racing on a night that packed a lot of heat on the race track as well as in the heat index. Will Slaughter took fast time for the Spartan Insulation Zoo Stock clocking in at 16.944. Dennis Mudd, Travis Petto, Aaron Anderson and Will Slaughter won the heat races. Ira Hosner reached the finish line first in the 15-lap Zoo Stock ‘B’ feature (his second of the season) and Aaron Anderson won the 20-lap ‘A’ feature.

Dave Leonard, Jr. took fast time in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Outlaw FWD with a time of 15.315 and went on to win the 25-lap feature, his second of the season. Sheldon Lindlag and Will Slaughter won the heat races.

Mike Brooks was fast qualifier (14.847) in the Street Stock and later won the 30-lap feature, his third. Two 10-car heat races created mini-feature experiences with DJ Oxford and Brandon Zachary winning the heats.

Nick Pressler took fast time (13.923) in the Hutcherson Construction Template Late Models. Mike Brooks, like Will Slaughter, raced to success in two classes this evening; he and Eric McGlothlen winning the heat races. Chris Shannon picked up his third win of the season in the 35-lap feature race.

Weekly racing is on tap for Friday, June 18 when the Outlaw Super Late Models, Street Stock, Outlaw FWD and the Zoo Stock are back in action. Tickets windows and the pits open at 3:30 PM with practice and qualifying starting at 5:20. Racing begins at 7:30.
