Cooney ends weekend with Victory in East Series debut at Maquoketa

By Anthony Ainslie (Maquoketa, IA) -- Another new track hosted the Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Models East Series Saturday as the tour made its first ever visit to the Maquoketa Speedway.

Round 11 of the season for the East Series’ Iowa tripleheader took part on the high-banked quarter-mile bullring at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. A field of 25 cars made the journey out to Maquoketa for a chance at a $3,000 payday.
For the third night in a row, Chad Holladay was the top qualifier in time trials. However, it was Todd Cooney and Curt Schroeder who were on the front row for the 35-lap main event.

Cooney jumped out to the race lead while Curt Schroeder ran in second in the early laps. The first caution came out on lap eight when Darrel DeFrance pulled off the track while running in tenth.

Two laps later, Schroeder spun out in turn four while running fourth and collected Matt Ryan. They would finish 13th and 14th at the end of the race.
The final two cautions came out with 20 laps remaining, but from that point on, it was a run to the finish. Cooney led while Charlie McKenna and Dave Eckrich exchanged second, and point leader Justin Kay worked his way to fourth.

When the dust settled, Cooney captured an emotional victory. The Des Moines native the checkered flag less than 24 hours after learning about the death of his cousin the night before. It was Cooney’s second East Series win and his third East/West series win overall. Dave Eckrich took second while Justin Kay took third at the end. Charlie McKenna finished fourth, and Curt Martin rounded out the top ten in only his second appearance with the series.

The Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking East Series now has a week off. As for the Malvern Bank West Series, they get ready for a Saturday night showdown at the Off-Road Speedway in Norfolk, Nebraska for the Bob Haase Memorial. Then, both tours come together for the 44th annual Yankee Dirt Track Classic on September 3rd and 4th at the 300 Raceway in Farley, Iowa.
