Taylor Overcomes Early Mishap to Post Third-Place Finish in Modified

Inside Line Promotions – PUEBLO, Colo. (May 8, 2019) – Fresh off a non-wing sprint car win on dirt, Zac Taylor strapped into a Grand American Modified last Saturday at I-25 Speedway and drove to a third-place finish on the asphalt oval.

“Considering I only got to race that car a couple of times last year, we were fast right out of the trailer,” he said. “Our practice times were the same as the track champion from last year. We qualified second quick and started on the outside of the front row in the heat race. The bottom is where you want to be and I had to work my way down there and ended up second.”

Taylor, who was driving for Steve Davis, rolled off from the pole for the feature and battled side by side for the lead the first 10 laps.

“I had the inside and we raced side by side and then the guy turned left right into my front end and knocked the front wheels out,” he said. “I don’t know how that can happen when we have radios and spotters. It took me a few laps to gather it back in. I learned that on asphalt, unlike dirt, you need to stick your nose under cars and force them to move up to make a pass.

“I was able to maintain and hold on for a third-place finish. I was happy with the car and learned a ton. Hopefully we can keep this momentum up this week when we get back to the non-wing sprint car.”

Taylor will return to the seat of the family owned non-wing sprint car this Saturday at El Paso County Raceway in Calhan, Colo., with the Lucas Oil POWRi Warrior Sprint Series. He picked up his first ever non-wing sprint car win at El Paso County Raceway two weeks ago.

“Getting all this different experience is making me a better racer,” he said. “My dad is the crew chief and he had never set up a non-wing car before so we are both learning and that will make me better when we get back to racing Todd Henry’s midget next week in Fort Morgan.”
