STUHLER BACK IN DIRT CAPITOL VICTORY LANE FOR A SECOND TIME, PALMER WINS HIS SECOND, THE LATE MODEL SPORTSMAN SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP
HAGERSTOWN, MD. (May 2) – On Mothers Night, Gary Stuhler returned to Hagerstown Speedway/Dirt Capitol victory lane for the second time this season with Saturday’s triumph over Trever Feathers. It was the career 133rd for Hagerstown’s all-time leading feature winner and National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame veteran.
Stuhler came from seventh and gradually worked his way to the front until getting past Feathers following a 19th lap restart.
“I kinda didn’t have a shot at it until that yellow came out,” Stuhler said. “I didn’t know what was going to happen. I wasn’t very good on the top. I just drove it in there and tried to force it in there to get it to get traction. I had to catch the stuff on the bottom to keep traction to the car. It just worked out that the yellow came when it did.”
Current point leader Scott Palmer became the second driver to repeat wins in the Malloy Ford Late Model Sportsman Spring Championship after getting past Jonathan DeHaven Jr. with seven laps to go to pick up the double point $1,000 to win event. Mike Corbin was back in victory lane for the fourth time this season and overall 20th time in the K-Lynn Management Pure Stocks while Gary Proctor recorded his season second and career 25th in the Mason Dixon Auto Auction Hobby Stocks.
D. J. Myers and Brian Tavenner started on the Late Model front row as Tavenner took charge over Myers and Feathers with Myers charging to the lead following a fourth lap restart. Feathers passed Tavenner on the seventh lap and then pressured Myers while Stuhler also moved Tavenner back to fourth on the ninth lap.
Two laps later, Feathers advanced past Myers for the lead and left him to deal with Stuhler who arrived on Myers bumper and made the pass on the 19th lap as Myers suddenly coasted to a stop in the second turn.
When Feathers used a low entry on the restart, Stuhler used the opportunity to quickly blast around his outside and take command off the second turn. Feathers didn’t give up easily but in the final two laps, Stuhler opened a little breathing room and won by 1.058 seconds. Kyle Lear, Tavenner and Devin Friese were next.
The Late Model Sportsman went off heads up as DeHaven surged to the front over Kyle Lee who was overtaken on the third lap by Palmer. Palmer made up nearly a half straightaway to get in challenging position by the seventh lap. He kept the pressure on DeHaven until finally seizing the opportunity to charge ahead on the 19th lap while Paul Cursey overtook DeHaven following a lap 21 caution but Palmer sped ahead to take the win by 2.421 seconds. DeHaven ended third over Travis Stickley and Lee.
“That was a good race with all those laps and DeHaven,” Palmer said. ”We really had a good race going. We talked before the race and we both wanted to win but he slipped up one time and that gave me the chance to get by.”
Craig Parrill charged to the front while Chris Ebersole quickly grabbed second on lap two. Parrill, Ebersole and Brian Miller toured the track a length apart while Corbin joined them on the sixth lap. When the group encountered a rear car on the ninth lap, Corbin slipped into second while Ebersole dropped to fourth. On the 12th lap, Miller made contact with Parrill as they both spun as Corbin took over for the final three laps. Jamie Zentmyer, initially to start on the pole, charged from the rear of the field and took second from Ebersole with three to go but came up two lengths short. Eleventh starter Kenny Dillon was fourth over Michelle Walls.
Gary Proctor and Jason Sarver started on the front row of the Hobby Stock feature as Proctor took the lead while Sarver charged forward on a fourth lap restart but Proctor came back to regain the lead three laps later. Seventh starter Tom Caravello passed Sarver on the tenth lap and closed to two lengths of Proctor at the finish. Kenny Thomas ended third over Jamie Mills and Sarver.
