FAST TIME TO WINNER, JACKSON TAKES ERNIE D’S FALL BASH $8,000

HAGERSTOWN, MD (October 25) - On Friday, Keith Jackson took his Late Model around Hagerstown Speedway/Dirt Capitol in 18.760 seconds followed by J.T. Spence’s time of 18.840 to lock them onto the front row of the two night 1st Annual Ernie D’s Fall Bash.
On Saturday, when the green waved putting the 40-Lap $8,000 feature into motion, Jackson, from Odenton, MD, was up on the wheel from the get go and led every lap from the pole to edge Rick Eckert by 2.329 seconds in lapped traffic. It was Jackson’s second win of the season.
“This was special,” Jackson said. “We won the first time we came here this year in the Ernie Jones Tribute and won the last time we came here this year. It really means a lot to me and for everybody from MBH. It means a lot for us to be able to win for Huey especially. He was a good friend to all of us. Last night was a good pill draw and good qualifying spot. If it wasn’t for the qualifying spot, I might not be here in victory lane tonight. I can’t thank everybody enough.”
The event signified the end of the season for Hagerstown Speedway/Dirt Capitol LLC with exception of the Awards Banquet to be held December 6th.
Late Model Sportsman champion Justin Weaver picked up $1,200 for his sixth season triumph while Mike Corbin recorded his overall career 50th win in the Pure Stocks, his 14th of the season. Gary Proctor scored his tenth season win in Hobby Stocks while Gary Newell posted his first ever Hagerstown win in the Four Cylinders and Justin Williamson was the Rookie Car winner.
Jackson sped off the pole with sixth starting Mason Zeigler quickly moving into second with fourth starter Rick Eckert taking Zeigler’s position on the fourth lap while Jackson was out front nearly three seconds.
On a lap seven restart, Zeigler got slightly out of shape getting into turn one as Vic Coffey made contact and sent Zeigler around.
Jackson set sail on the next restart while 11th starting Kyle Lear advanced past Marvin Winters and Spence into third on the 10th lap. Back to back yellows on the 17th and 18th laps bunched the field and put Eckert on Jackson’s bumper but Jackson never hesitated and was back to running away. Greg Satterlee was all the way from 19th and made his way into fourth on the 21st lap as he began to challenge Lear for the third spot.
With the green flag still out, Jackson caught the tail of the field and made his first pass on the 32nd lap and continued on while he began to open some distance on Eckert who also got mired in traffic.
Jackson powered on to win over Eckert by 2.329 seconds while Satterlee got past Lear for third with two to go but finished another three seconds behind.
“If Rick would have got the lead, I really highly doubt that we would have got back around him,” Jackson said. “When I was a kid I liked watching him (Eckert). It’s pretty awesome to race him but better to be able to beat him.”
Lear and Spence completed the first five while Winters, Brian Tavenner (13th), Dylan Yoder (20th), Coffey and Allen Brannon (24) rounded out the top ten.
Coffey, Eckert, Gene Knaub and Zeigler were the heat winners with Yoder winning the consolation. Co-Promoter Ernie Davis started 26 cars plus added Gary Stuhler and C.S. Fitzgerald as provisionals to the field.
The 20-Lap $1,200 to win Late Model Sportsman line up had heat winners Scott Palmer and Justin Weaver on the front row as Weaver swung high and wide while Palmer swept low off the second turn and came away with the lead. Palmer used the low side on a lap five restart and Weaver made the best of it to grab the lead while Kyle Lee, Bruce Kane and Chad Myers were into the next positions and chasing Palmer by the next lap.
Weaver held a several length lead on Palmer with Myers mobbing into third by the 12th lap with an 18th lap yellow putting Palmer on Weavers bumper. Weaver powered on to win by .272 seconds over Palmer with Myers, Kane and Lee completing the top five.
“I knew restarts were going to be crucial and Scott was good in the beginning.” Weaver said. “I tried to tell myself just to calm down and get a good run here in the end and it worked out. I was using up a lot of race track but it was everything I had to do, Scott was fast.”
Mike Corbin and Jamie Zentmyer were the Pure Stock heat winners and sat on the front row of the $600 to win feature as Zentmyer was called for jumping the initial start and sent to the rear. On the restart, it became the Mike and Mike show with Hagerstown and Winchester champions Corbin and Mike Franklin going at it until the finish. Franklin kept tossing challenges lap after lap but Corbin wasn’t giving up and finally got to the checkered by .130 seconds with Chris Ebersole finishing 2.980 seconds back in third. Sean Dawson and Josh Wilkins completed the top five.
“That was a blast, racing side by side with Mike Franklin, “Corbin said. “You couldn’t ask for anything better. I don’t know what it was like to watch, but it was pretty exciting behind the wheel. Getting my 50th win, that’s unbelievable, I never thought I’d get five. It’s amazing.”
The $400 to win Hobby Stock event had heat winners Chuck Bowie and Gary Proctor outside as Proctor took command while Bowie presented a couple challenges early on while Gary Deason, Brian Neff and Mike Rutherford got in the mix. A caution with three to go set up the chase to the checkered with Proctor winning by .555 seconds over Bowie and Rutherford passing Deason on the final lap for third. Neff finished fifth.
“I knew Chuck was fast and I had to keep in the middle grove and keep him on the very bottom,” Proctor said. “I didn’t want to give him the high side. I figured he’d put me up in the slick stuff.”
William Riley led the Four Cylinder $300 feature while Gary Newell moved into second on the third lap and began challenging to the lead and came away with in on the seventh. Newell ran away to win by 3.232 seconds over Michael Warrenfeltz who took the runner up spot with two to go. Riley was third with JR Whitlock and Frankie Gordon completing the top five.
“This is unbelievable,” Newell said. “I went three years without winning a race. The track was awesome. I have to thank everyone for sticking with me and working towards this goal. I want to dedicate this to my wife who passed away about four years ago.”
Justin Williamson picked up $200 for his flag to flag win in the Rookie Cars.
Williamson stretched his lead over Michael Pfaff and won by 1.704 seconds after the ten lap run. Bailey Johnson, Ryan Peer and Haley Kaiser completed the top five.
“My steering column broke after about halfway and I was holding onto it,” Williamson said. “It’s still hanging down.”
