Autism Awareness Night at Fremont Speedway
Autism is very much misunderstood by the general public. Those impacted by this complex disorder of brain development – particularly children – are often socially awkward and subject to bullying and isolation. Fremont Speedway and the Mike It Fit Foundation are working to change the misconceptions and how others treat those impacted by Autism.
Saturday, April 23rd is Bring a Friend to Autism Action Night at Fremont Speedway. Besides the great racing in the 410 and 305 sprints, dirt trucks and late models, there will be raffles, bake sales, drawings, giveaways and other special fund-raising activities to help benefit children with autism in Sandusky County.
“Last year we raised enough at Fremont Speedway to provide iPods and swimming lessons for autistic children in the county. We know through the generosity of our fans we can do even more this year,” said event organizer Shelly Liskai.
Those with autism have difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. One such young man is Tyler Aldrich, 21, of Fremont. But, as he likes to point out, he is living with autism, not suffering from it. And to encourage others with autism and raise autism awareness, Aldrich will run “across Ohio.”
Aldrich will begin his run in Fremont on June 11 and end in Cincinnati about two weeks later. He also hopes to raise at least $100,000 for autism programs and services in Ohio through the Make It Fit Foundation.
Aldrich will be on hand Saturday at Fremont Speedway. Those wishing to donate to Aldrich’s run – Conquering Autism One Mile at a Time – can contact Tami at 419-333-9361 or 419-680-3671 or TylersRun@makeitfit.org. You can view Tyler’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Tylers-Journey-Run-Ohio. Or you can make checks payable to Make It Fit 7385 N. St. Rt. 3, Suite 50, Westerville, Ohio 43082. To donate online go to www.makeitfit.org/donate and put “Tyler’s Run” in the memo.
Race fans can get free pictures with the Make It Fit Foundation sprint car owned and driven by Kirk Jeffries at Fremont Speedway on Saturday from 3:30 p.m. until racing starts.
