THE HOLLENBECK BROTHERS WIN FONDA FAIR FOUR CYLINDER FEATURES BEFORE RAIN COMES IN AND CANCELS THE REMAINDER OF THE RACING PROGRAM

By: Ron Szczerba

Fonda, NY – After three weeks of no racing at the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway, fans and drivers looked forward to being back in competition on Saturday evening in a racing program sponsored by Upstate Spray Foam. Unfortunately, after the checkered flag fell on the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder feature the rain came in and cancelled the remainder of the racing program.

“The amount of time that it would take to dry the track would be too long,” Fonda Speedway announcer Chris Moore told the crowd. “After all of the time that was spent getting the track right trying to run it in after all of the rain may put us in the same predicament that we were in a couple of weeks ago, so we are calling the racing program at this time.”

Mimi Lazzaro mentioned Bob McCreadie in opening ceremonies who recently passed away saying that the speedway was thinking of his family after their loss. McCreadie had a total of four victories at Fonda although he was never a regular competitor at the track including two wins in the prestigious Fonda 200 along with an opening day victory and a Syracuse qualifier win.

The 50/50 girls did a great job selling tickets on a rain shortened night with Bob from Gloversville winning the $1219 50/50 prize.

Kerrie Hollenbeck led lap one of the 12-lap Fonda Fair Four Cylinder feature after starting in the third position and held on to the lead until lap four when his brother Ken took over the spot. Ken held the lead for two laps before Kerrie retook the top spot and led the rest of the way for the win in the DOHC class while Ken finished second good enough for the SOHC victory.

The win for Kerrie was the 42nd of his career in the division while Ken took the 96th win of his career.

“Kenny is an outside man here at the track,” Kerrie said in victory lane. “It seemed as though tonight it was good to be on the outside until the rain started. I just kept sticking to the bottom where I like it and I never heard anyone behind me, so I just stayed there all race long.”

“This is actually the first race I’ve finished this year,” Ken said in victory lane. “Being its almost June that’s kind of weird. As the feature went on I really couldn’t turn the car tonight and a special thank you to Len St. Andrews who allowed me to use his car in the second feature a few weeks ago. We are really kind of out of the points, but it really doesn’t matter this year.”

The wins for both Kerrie and Ken were worth an extra $100 from Upstate Auto.

Next Saturday, June 1 will be Caputo Racing Night at Fonda with the CRSA Sprints in competition along with all other regular divisions.
