Winslow Excited About Capping Memorable Super Stocks Year with First Career Track Title

On Bubba Winslow’s page, under Racing Accomplishments it reads, “To Be Continued… .�

He can add, “Not for long,� now.

Winslow, 21, will lock up his first career track title by simply taking the green flag in the 25-Lap Super Stocks feature Friday at Five Flags Speedway.

“I don’t think it really has set in that we’ve won the championship,� Winslow said, “because to me, we still have the pressure to go out there and perform well. We’ve gotta cross all the ‘T’s’ and dot all the ‘I’s’ to do that.�

While the Super Stocks tie a bow on their year, the Super Late Models also return Friday for the Miller Lite 100, the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Blizzard Series season finale.

The Sportsmen and Bombers also continue their respective seasons when the famed half-mile, asphalt oval opens its gates at 5 p.m. Friday.

Grandstands admission is as follows: $15 Adults; $14 Seniors/Military; $12 Students; $5 Child (6-11); Under 6 is Free. The pits open at 1 p.m. with passes costing $25.

Winslow, a Super Stocks rookie, understands the importance of closing the deal and won’t take his healthy 47-point lead for granted.

In May, Winslow brought his black No. 44 into the special 50-lap event, confident he had the car to beat in.

Instead, he didn’t complete a lap thanks to a faulty drive shaft and was regulated to a disappointing 16th.

“I don’t wanna go in there with that much confidence,� said Winslow, who began racing at Five Flags six years ago. “I just want a solid car where everything stays together. It was a hard lesson to learn, and you don’t soon forget it. It’s always something in the back of your head.�

Other than that nightmarish night, Winslow has enjoyed a dream season in 2011.

In his first full season on a Super Stocks wheel, he has collected three checkered flags and a pair of runner-ups.

It all began at last year’s Snowball Derby when Winslow was the fastest local Super Stock car and finished fourth. Not too shabby for the 21-year-old newlywed.

“It’s been a really good two years,� said Winslow, who finished second to Steve Buttrick in the Sportsman class last year.

“We still got to start and make a lap (Friday). We don’t want to count our chickens before all the eggs hatch. But it means a lot when your fellow competitors start coming up to you and congratulating you. We feel like we deserve it. It’s great to see.�
