MATT HAWKINS MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW FOR HAWKINS MOTORSPORTS
By Chad Cathell – Mother Nature has not been a friend of Dirt Track racing in Delaware this season by any means. After 4 consecutive rainouts in April-May, and going into this weekend it looked as if that trend may continue in July. However, track crews worked hard to ensure that didn’t happen, and in doing so we had the largest S.R. Pete & Son’s Super Late Model field of the year, and car counts in all other divisions also elevated.
When the NAPA Big Block Modifieds took to the track it was the defending champion HJ Bunting leading the way with fast time in hot laps. Into the feature it would be rookie Clay Tatman leading the way from the point. Tatman who proved to be strong in the heat, showed no signs of slowing down in the feature. Tatman would hold on strong for many laps, but cautions would come to be his demise.
The laps were starting to click away, and lurking behind Tatman would be Matt Hawkins and HJ Bunting. Cautions during the night would allow the two drivers to pick their way through the field. Tatman would hold strong as long as he could, but everything changed in one lap. As Bunting headed into turns one and two he setup Tatman and took the lead, and looked to be on his way to another win as he quickly tried to pull away. But Hawkins pulled one out of Lee Corso’s playbook, and said “Not so fast, my friend!, and when they rolled through turns three and four Bunting left just enough room for Hawkins to slip by for the lead. That made for three lead changes in one lap, but Hawkins put the power down on his DTM powered Big Block Chevrolet, and made sure it was the last lead change of the night as he pulled into victory lane making it 2 for 2 for Hawkins Motorsports in the last two races at Delaware International Speedway.
Heats on the night were won by Clay Tatman and Michael White
