THE ROCKET WAITS FOR TAKE OFF, LANDS IN VICTORY LANE

 

It was an turnout that made it seem like the “good ole days�, as 16 S.R. Pete & Son’s Super Late Models rolled into Delaware International on Saturday night. In hot laps it was Milton, Delaware’s, Mark Pettyjohn setting fast time to start out the night. In the heats Nick Davis and Ricky Elliott started their night out on the right note as they picked up wins in their respective heats.

 

In the feature it was Joe Warren and the experimental small block Ford that would lead the field to the green, but he only inherited the lead after Herb Tunis gave up his ride for the night to help out his friend, Donald Lingo Jr. try to maintain his points lead after his car suffered unfixable damage in his heat. Warren would do all he could to try and hold off Davis who started fifth, but made a hard charge to the front right off the bat, and had to surrender his lead. Davis would start setting the pace, but not without having Elliott, Kerry King, and Dylan Evans breathing down his neck. On lap 12 Davis lost power steering, and with that his lead began to dwindle. With the final laps closing down it was apparent there was an issue with Davis’ car, and Elliott started lurking for the win. In his interview, Elliott stated “he laid back to watch what was playing out ahead of him with Evans and Davis�, and by doing so, it allowed him to set himself up perfectly to take of the lead.

 

When the leaders came up on lap traffic, it was Davis who came off of his line and shot to the bottom to try and pass the lap car. But that’s where it all went wrong for Davis as Elliott jumped up on the high groove that Davis had been in, passed him and the lap car of Dave Hertz, and powered his way to the win. The win for Elliott, wasn’t the only win for a racer on Saturday night as Bob Geiger also picked up a win for himself, returning to the track only months after having a major surgery.
