JAMIE MILLS SWEEPS S.R. PETE & SONS, INC. TWIN 20’S

By CHARLIE BROWN, DELMAR, DE – It was just about as near a perfect night as Jamie Mills could hope for on Saturday night at the Delaware International Speedway. Mill captured his heat then swept the S.R. Pete & Sons, Inc. twin 20-lap feature. The two feature events were slowed only once by caution flags.

Brad Trice started on the pole in the first 20 lap feature while heat winners, Mills and Matt Jester started in sixth and fifth after the six car inversion draw. Trice controlled the early laps with Beau Wilkins riding in second. The solitary caution came out on lap three when H.J. Bunting got out of shape triggering a tangle between Shawn Ward and Dale Hawkins.

On the restart Mills moved by Wilkins for second and one lap later took the lead from Trice. As Mills pulled away Wilkins was able to wrestle second from Trice just before halfway. Mills would collect the S.R. Pete & Sons halfway bonus.

Mills had built a big lead but Wilkins began to whittle away at it. With the race staying green time would run out on Wilkins as Mills crossed under the checkered 1.51 second ahead of Wilkins. Jester got by Trice on the final lap to finish in third with Howard O’Neal rounding out the top five.

In victory lane Mills’ good fortune for the night would continue as he drew a zero inversion putting him on the pole for the second feature. The race would go caution free which was perfect for Mills.

The lead trio of Mills, Wilkins and Jester put on a rim riding show running lap after lap just inches from the top of the turns. Any slight miscue would have sent any of the three off the top of the turn. The leaders were in lapped traffic by lap 12. Jester began to pressure Wilkins and with three to go moved into second.

Mills was too far out front to be challenged by Jester as he drove to his second win of the night and unofficially propelled himself into the point lead. Jester finished in second with Trice third. Fourth went to Wilkins and O’Neal rounded out the top five.
