AUSTIN HUBBARD ENDS RICKY ELLIOTT’S STREAK AT SEVEN IN DELAWARE LATE MODELS

By Charlie Brown, DELMAR, DE (6/22/13) – Austin Hubbard stayed at home this weekend and it paid off as he ended Ricky Elliott’s win streak at seven in the 30-lap Fall Championship Late Model Qualifier, Saturday night at the Delaware International Speedway.

 

Elliott had his work cut out for him right from the drop of the green as the inversion draw from the heats was a ten which started Elliott ninth and Hubbard tenth. David Pettyjohn started on the pole and set a quick pace with Mark Byram running second and Lou Johnson third

 

Hubbard was on the outside and was headed to the front in a hurry taking third by lap three. Elliott’s chances for an eighth win ended on lap four when he slowed down the back straight and pulled into the infield ending his night. One lap later, Hubbard shot from third to take the lead with Byram following into second.

 

Byram’s night would come to a quick end as he slowed to bring out the first of only two cautions on lap ten. Donald Lingo, Jr. had just pulled into the second spot and was able to keep Hubbard in sight on the restart. Pettyjohn held on to the third spot with Johnson and David Hill filling out the top five.

 

The final yellow would fall on lap 17 when Bob Geiger came to a stop in the second turn. Again on the restart Hubbard and Lingo, Jr. would pull away from the rest of the field. Hubbard would open a comfortable lead as he drove to his first checkered of the season. Lingo, Jr. finished in second with Hill getting by Pettyjohn with three to go to finish in third. Fourth went to Pettyjohn and Johnson ended a solid run in fifth.

 

“We’ve been working really hard to learn this new car,� said Hubbard in victory lane. “The good thing is it beginning to look like we are headed in the right direction with it.� Being Elliott was not running at the finish the bounty on him increases to $700 next Saturday night.
