Inside Line Promotions – COLUMBUS, Ohio (July 19, 2016) – All of the hard work finally paid off for Kevin Mingus, who drove an asphalt late model to his first win of the season last Saturday at Columbus Motor Speedway.
“I finally got the car qualified well,” he said. “We qualified seventh out of 22 cars, which is big improvement for us. It’s not where we want to be … we want to consistently be in the top five, but it was a ton better.
“Starting position is everything in these late models. The guys that consistently run up front are so close. We were able to start outside the front row. The car has been great the last month so I was confident we would have a great run. I got in the lead and we had a red with five laps to go when a car blew a motor. There was still some oil on the track when we restarted and I just kept my line.”
The trip to Victory Lane was his first in more than one year.
“The cool part is the guy who started on the pole last year when we got our first win started on the pole this past Saturday,” he said. “History kind of repeated itself.”
Mingus also had encouraging results on the dirt in the 305ci sprint car on Friday during his debut at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio, with the JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Sprint Series. Following struggles in his heat race, he stormed from the 13th starting position in the B Main to a sixth-place finish, missing the feature transfer by only two spots.
“That was the first time I’ve ever seen that track,” he said. “We tried some changes in our heat and went backwards. We put on the wrong shocks and the car bounced around like a basketball. I went up and watched John Ivy come from the tail to win his heat. He’s won in 410 sprints and I knew I could learn and I did. I found out the bottom might open up.
“We changed the car for the B Main and it was a rocket. That was a blast. I hope Rich Farmer (the FAST promoter) gets us back there a couple of times next year.”
Mingus returns to action this Friday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, for a sprint car race and Saturday at Columbus Motor Speedway for a late model event.

“I felt great to finally get the guys the finish they deserve,” Mingus said. “I’ve let them down qualifying and hopefully we can start getting the consistent results. There’s anywhere from a half dozen to a dozen guys that work their tails off in the shop all week and the win is for them.”
