Joshua Shipley Earns Top-Five Finish After Year-Long Break from Non-Wing Sprint Cars

Inside Line Promotions – PEORIA, Ariz. (Oct. 4, 2017) – Joshua Shipley returned to his roots last Saturday after not racing in a non-wing sprint car for more than a year.
It didn’t take him long to get the feel of things as he ended the night with a fourth-place finish at Canyon Speedway Park with the NAPA Desert Sprint Car Series.
“My weekend was a lot better than I had expected,” he said. “My car has been sitting for a year and I hadn’t raced non-wing in a year. It took a little bit to get us running well, but we got it figured out.”
Shipley started fourth in his heat race and finished second. That made him the fifth qualifier for the night. A six-car inversion placed him and his younger brother, Kyle Shipley, on the front row of the feature.
“After all of the years we’ve been racing, we got to start on the front row of a main event together,” Joshua Shipley said. “We knew it was going to be one heck of a battle between us and we definitely had some good, hard racing for the first five laps.”
Stevie Sussex got around the both of them before Shipley’s brother broke a front end, moving Joshua Shipley into second place. He remained in that position until a green-white-checkered restart.
“I went into turn one and felt the car lean way over,” he said. “I hit a rut and bounced pretty high into the air and lost a spot. Going into turn three, the car did the same thing. It turned out I had a right rear shock go dead on me.”
Shipley crossed the finish line in fourth place. After having such a long break since his last non-wing race, Shipley was extremely pleased with the outcome.
“It was a lot of fun,” he said. “My winged sprint owners and crew came out to support me, which was really nice. We also had Hendrickson Construction come on board and help us out this weekend so I’ve got to give a huge thanks to them, too.”
Shipley will be back in a winged sprint car this Saturday at Arizona Speedway in Queen Creek, Ariz., for the 2nd annual Lealand McSpadden Classic with the ASCS Southwest Region.
