Larry Wight The Class Of The Brewerton Speedway Modified Field With Big Victory

BREWERTON, NY – Coming into Friday night racing, Larry Wight from Phoenix, NY sat right in the thick of the battle for the Brewerton Speedway Modified track championship only 12 points out of first place with only a handful of races left to decide the 2019 title.
In the 35-lap Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modified feature, Wight behind the wheel of his FX Caprara Chevy, Gypsum Express, Tracey Road Equipment, LJL Kevlar Racing Engines, No.99L would battle lap after lap in the early going with Tyler Trump taking the lead just before halfway. Once out front nobody would challenge Wight the rest of the way for his first win at the speedway in 2019.
Other winners on Stirling Lubricants/Champion Racing Oil and Milton Cat night were, Amy Holland (DOT Foods DIRTcar Sportsman) Casey Sykes (U.S Air Force Mod Lites) Chuck Powelczyk (Fleet Repairs Truck & Trailer Repair 4-Cylinders).
Nick Krause and Katelyn Hile would bring the Modified feature to the green with Hile grabbing the lead before pole sitter Krause slowed to a stop ending his night with mechanical issues.
Tyler Trump would grab the lead on the restart and by lap 5 would open a few car lengths advantage with Larry Wight, Tim Sears Jr., Andrew Ferguson and Hile chasing in the top-five.
With 10 laps showing on the scoring tower, Trump, Wight and Ferguson were in a three-car breakaway at the front of the field with Sears and Ron Davis III having a battle of their own for fourth and fifth.
After working on Trump, trying to find a way by, Wight powered off the low groove and shot by Trump for the lead on lap 17.
Wight would bolt out to a big lead by lap 20 leaving Trump, Ferguson, Davis and Sears in a tight fight for second through fifth.
With 10 laps remaining Wight was a rocket ship opening an almost 4 second lead. Trump was still strong, racing alone in second with Ferguson, Davis and Sears still occupying top-five spots.
A late yellow erased Wight’s big lead giving the field one last shot to steal the win away in a green, white and checkered finish.
When the green waved there was no stopping Larry Wight as he bolted away for his first Brewerton win of the year. Tim Sears Jr. was impressive on the restart going from fifth to finish second. Tyler Trump, Andrew Ferguson and Billy Decker rounded out the top-five.
The points battle for the track championship has really heated up going into the final five-point races before season ending extra distance events.
83x – Tim Sears Jr. (456) 99L – Larry Wight (448) 91 – Billy Decker (444) 62s – Tom Sears Jr. (434) 98H – Jimmy Phelps (408).
In the 25-lap Sportsman feature Joe Sobotka led the opening 3 laps when the yellow would wave and then would see Tim Devendorf power around Sobotka and Amy Holland to be scored the new leader on the restart.
After a second yellow and restart on lap 4, Holland took advantage as she got by Devendorf to take the lead.
By lap 10 Holland opened a ten-car length lead over Devendorf as you could have thrown a blanket over Sobotka, Chris Mackey, Mike Prentice, Earl Rudy and Kevin Root for third through seventh.
Cautions on lap 12 & 13 erased Holland’s full straightaway lead giving the rest of the top-five a shot at the win over the remaining laps.
Over those remaining laps there was no stopping the fan favorite Amy Holland as she was first under the checkers for her first ever Brewerton win by almost two seconds over Chris Mackey. Alan Fink, Tim Devendorf and Earl Rudy finished third through fifth.
In the 20-lap Mod Lite feature Doug Williams led the opening two laps before Brian Meyers blasted by Williams to be scored the new leader.
With 5 laps showing on the scoring tower Meyers was cruising out front with a half-a-straightaway lead over Williams and Casey Sykes with Justin Williams and Zack Babcock showing in the top-five.
A yellow on lap 12 would see Meyers' almost three-second lead disappear. After the restart it would take Tucker Halliday just two laps to take the lead by inches at the flag stand.
With 5 laps to go Meyers retook the lead but that would be short lived as he spun in turns 3 & 4 but somehow kept it going, not losing many positions.
Casey Sykes would take the lead by a half-a-car length going under the flag stand as the white flag waved. Tucker Halliday fought back, but it was Sykes at the checkers by a slim 0.252 of a second. It was Sykes' fourth win-in-a-row. Zack Babcock, Doug Williams and Brian Meyers came home third through fifth.
In the 15-lap 4-Cylinder feature it was a battle royal between Evan Wright and Chuck Powelczyk. Powelczyk would hound Wright every single lap, trying to get by. With 2 laps to go Powelczyk found the opening he needed to drive into the lead and go on to the win. Ken Pitsley, Scott Mallete and Clayton Koch finished third through fifth.
In victory lane Chuck Powelczyk dedicated his win to his good friend Russ Cusson who lost his life in the early 2000s.
This coming Friday, August 2 Scott Jeffery’s Performance Plus will present a night of the fastest, family, affordable fun in Central NY.
