Matt Sheppard Dominates Brewerton Speedway Super DIRTcar Series Showdown At Sundown
BREWERTON, NY – Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway Matt Sheppard from Waterloo, NY dominated the Modified Super DIRTcar Series 100 lap Showdown at Sundown lapping up to tenth place for his 60th series win.
Sheppard was fastest in his time trial group, won his heat and drew the pole for feature. In the 100-lap race the only thing that slowed the defending series champion down was two caution periods. When the checkers waved at the end of the race he was over seven seconds ahead of second place finisher Billy Decker.
Other winners on McDonald’s® Restaurants night Chris Cunningham (SUNY Canton DIRTcar Sportsman) Justin Williams (STARS Mod Lites). On lap 7 of the second Sportsman feature an issue with the generator caused the back straight lights to go out. The rest of the 25-lap feature will be finished on Friday, June 22.
Matt Sheppard and Willy Decker brought the 30-car field down to the green with Sheppard bolting out to the early advantage while the racing behind him was two and three wide in the early going of the 100-lap main.
With 10 laps complete Sheppard held around a ten-car length advantage as he started to catch the back of the field. Willy Decker, Billy Decker, Jimmy Phelps and Larry Wight were in a tight fight for third through fifth.
The first yellow flag would wave on lap 18 when track points leader Larry Wight suddenly slowed in turns three and four erasing Sheppard’s comfortable lead. Wight would not return after going to the pits.
With 30 laps showing on the scoring tower Sheppard still ran the bottom as Billy Decker kept pace racing on the top side of the speedway. Phelps, Danny Johnson and Pat Ward waged a tight race of their own running third through fifth.
The final caution of the race would come on lap 45 when Danny Varin slowed to a stop.
At lap 60 Sheppard would have a 1.5 second lead as Decker chased the leader running alone in second. Phelps, Johnson, Ward and Erick Rudolph used the bottom, middle and top grooves of the track racing in a tight third through sixth.
With 25 to go Sheppard was on cruise control out front leading by almost 4 seconds. Decker still ran second but now had pressure as Phelps was quickly gaining on him. Johnson, Rudolph and Ward raced hard in traffic for fourth, fifth and sixth place.
Over the remaining laps and no yellows to tighten the field up, Matt Sheppard ran away and hid winning by 7.4 seconds at the checkers over Billy Decker. Jimmy Phelps, Danny Johnson and Erick Rudolph finished third through fifth.
In the first SUNY Canton DIRTcar Sportsman 25-lap feature Joe Abbass led the opening 8 laps in a close side by side race with Jake Petit until Petit was able to take over the top spot running the top side of the speedway.
On lap 13 last week's feature winner Nick Krause went from fourth to second just before a yellow would slow the field. On the restart Krause would drive into the lead.
With 10 laps to go Krause and Rich Townsend were in a two-car breakaway in a close battle for the lead. Petit, Chris Cunningham and Zach Sobotka showed on the scoring tower in third through fifth.
The whole race would change on lap 22 going into turn one when Krause and Townsend made contact racing for the lead. The contact would see Townsend’s front-end collapse after hitting an implement tire. Officials would send Krause to the back of the field because of the contact.
Chris Cunningham would take over the top spot and would then hold off all challenges the rest of the way for his first Brewerton Speedway win. Joe Abbass, Chris Mackey, Zach Sobotka and Kevin Root finished second through fifth.
The second 25-lap Sportsman feature would see a generator problem cause the lights to go out on the back straightaway bringing out the red flag. The feature will be completed on Friday, June 22 from lap 7 on NAPA Auto Parts night. Top-five running order is Tyler Thompson, Alan Fink, Amy Holland, Dave Marcuccilli and Stephen Denton.
In the 20-lap STARS Mod Lite feature Joe Garafolo and Justin Williams would swap the lead back and forth until Williams took over the lead for good on lap 7. Once out front there was no slowing Williams and he cruised to his fourth straight victory. Joe Garafolo, Zack Babcock, Mike Mullen and Dave Brown finished second through fifth.
This Friday, June 22 NAPA Auto Parts will present a night of racing excitement at the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon." On the race card will be the resumption of the June 15 Sportsman feature and the second visit of the season from the Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux RUSH Late Models plus the Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds, SUNY Canton Sportsman, STARS Mod Lites, JB Logging & Firewood 4-Cylinders and the Home Depot Kids Work Shop.
