This past Friday, June 2nd, it was the Domino’s Fast Friday’s night at Auto City Speedway with a full on racing program.
Temps were pretty high as well as the humidity, but that did not stop the racing action and the fans from having fun. The track had been getting sun baked all day, so it did make for some handling issues with competitors doing some ‘slide jobs’ coming out of the turns.
Qualifying for the new Pro Street Stock division was first of the activities and it was veteran driver Jeff Owens in his yellow and orange #65 Camaro topping the field with a 17.08 around the ½ mile. Kevin Harder in his #44 got second fast with a 17.31
The All American Trucks were next up to qualify and it was that familiar purple #422 of Anthony Richardson getting fast time of 17.55.
It was now the Herald Pure Stocks turn and Mike Mosier in his #22 blue Monte Carlo was fastest with a 16.20 around the ¼ mile.
And final qualifying for the night was the Red Apple Fireworks FWD (front wheel drive) division and the driver who can’t be stopped, Jason Jones again, set fast time again in his #11j with a 16.59. Also hitting below the 17 second mark was Jeffery Asmus with a 16.96.
So after the invocation and national anthem, it was time for all the action.
The heat races for all divisions started the racing and it was the Herald Pure Stocks eight lap heat races first. The #81 of Tim Kirby and the #05 of Andrew Burton led them to green. It was Burton jumping out to an early lead followed by Kirby and Jim Miller Jr. is his NASCAR Buddy Baker throwback paint scheme of silver and black #9 following in third. Miller Jr. did make it up to second to battle with Burton on the inside, they were side by side for a few laps, but when the checkered flew, it was Burton beating out Miller Jr. by .045 of a second.
The second heat race for the Herald Pure Stocks was next and it was Lonnie Saumier Jr. in his #M15 machine and Nick Johnston in his #7 on the front row.
This race was almost just like the first as Saumier Jr. and Johnston battled side by side with Johnston edging out Saumier Jr. by .064 of a second. Note, both finishes were “that close” in timing.
The All American Trucks heat races were now up and in the first heat, it was the #006 of Ken McNarney and Jason Wolf #77 leading them to the start.
Wolf took an early lead with the #J21 of Walt Dalrymple Jr. following in second at the halfway mark, Dalrymple Jr. got to the front bringing Ricky Gillett’s #51 with him. But it was another close race for second as Gillett had Cameron Delong’s #95 battling at his side. When the checkered flew, the finishing order was Dalrymple Jr., Gillett and Delong.
The second heat race for the A.A.T.’s had the #81 of Brannon Cudd and #22 of Brian Dougherty leading the way to green.
Cudd got the jump and kept the lead for the whole race with the #47x of Joe Shamel getting second and Anthony Richardson taking third.
Now it was time for the Pro Street Stock heat race on the big track. The green and white #M15 machine of Lonnie Saumier Jr. and the black #32 of Casey Snover brought them to the green. Going into turn one, both Saumier Jr. and Snover touched, with Snover making a nice save and continuing on, but giving that top spot to Saumier Jr. When the eight laps were completed, it was Saumier Jr., Jeff Owens, and Kevin Harder.
The Red Apple Fireworks FWD heats were next up and it was the “B series” first with the ladies of the field, rookie, Kenize Arden #58jr and 2021 Lipstick Ladies champion, Barb Boone #66 leading them to the start. Once the eight laps were completed, it was the #01 of Bradley Trichel getting the top spot followed by William Grubbs Jr. #96.
In the “A series”, it was Charlie Boone’s #70 and the #83 of Troy Deuscher bringing them down to green. By the completion of lap one, it was Michael Schmidt’s #31 leading the way followed by Deuscher and Jason Jones #11j. When it was over, it was Jones with the win, followed by Deuscher and Jeff Asmus #14.
After a short intermission, it was time for the feature races. The Herald Pure Stocks were first up with their thirty lap feature on the ¼ mile.
It was long time veteran driver, with a new paint scheme, Mark Martinez #34 and the #81 of Tim Kirby leading them to the green.
By lap one, Andrew Burton in his #05 got the lead and following him was Lonnie Saumier Jr. #M15 and Nick Johnston #7. At about lap eight, Saumier Jr. and Burton were side by side battling for the lead with Johnston on their bumper waiting for the opportunity to jump. On lap ten, Saumier Jr. was out front, leaving Burton and Johnston battling side by side for second. As those two battled, it was fast qualifier, Mike Moiser in his #22 getting into the mix. So it was a three way battle for second, giving Saumier Jr. more of a cushion with his lead. As the checkered flew, it was Saumier Jr., Mosier, Johnston, Burton and Miller Jr. rounding out the top five. A surprise in victory lane happened, as a Vietnam Veteran came down out of the stands, not knowing Lonnie Jr., and presented him with a Vietnam Medal he had received and also a solid silver coin from 1923 (a 100 yr. old coin). He did this just as a gesture of kindness and God Bless him for that offering.
The All American Trucks thirty lap feature was scheduled next and the #81 of Brannon Cudd and the #22 of Brian Dougherty led them to green. On the first lap, coming out of turn four, trying to go three wide, things got a bit squirrely and created a pretty good pile up on the front stretch involving Cudd, Joe Shamel #47x and the #1 of Jim Cudd. All three ended up being towed off to the pits and a complete restart was set.
Now it was Dougherty and Dan Shamel #47 leading them to green. Shamel did jump to an early lead, but by lap three, it was the purple #422 of Richardson getting past Shamel. As the laps clicked down, Richardson padded his lead while the others battled behind him.
When it was all said and done, it was Richardson, Shamel, Jason Grissom #224, Dougherty, and Cameron Delong #95 respectively.
Now it was time for the Pro Street Stocks thirty lap feature. It was again, the #M15 of Saumier Jr. and #32 of Snover on the front row. When the green dropped, it was Saumier Jr. jumping to the early lead with Jeff Owens getting up to second and Snover dropping back to third. By lap five, it was the veteran driver Adam Rowe getting to the lead in his silver #0. As the laps counted down, Rowe never looked back, but developed ‘brake fade’ to where he had no brakes by the end of the race. But when you are leading, you don’t need brakes as he got the win followed by Owens, Saumier Jr., Snover and Kevin Harder rounding out the top five.
The Red Apple Fireworks “A” and “B” series ran their feature together with the #31 of Michael Schmidt and #83 of Troy Deuscher leading the way. Schmidt got out to an early lead, but as the pace picked up, it was that buzzing little Honda of Jason Jones #11j getting to the lead by lap three. On lap five, Jeffery Asmus #14, who was running third at the time, spun bringing out a yellow flag.
As they went back to green flag racing, Schmidt developed an issue bringing out another yellow and Schmidt dropping out. When they got back to racing, it was Jones leading the way and gaining yet another feature win this year. He has won every feature he’s entered at Auto City Speedway. Asmus did work his way back up to second and the #83 of Deuscher was third with Charlie Boone #70 fourth and Schmidt.
In the “B” series, it was the silver #01 of Bradley Treichel getting the win over Rod Nettleton #33 and William Grubbs Jr. #96.
The last race of the night was the Auto City Figure 8’s. It was again, the two showmen of this series, Anthony Richardson and Andrew Burton putting on a clinic. Richardson did jump into the seat of his silver #422 and battled with Burton on every corner and straight away. Burton did get to the lead and even though Richardson was on his back bumper making Burton work for it, the #05 of Burton did get the win followed by Richardson, Paul Rigda III driving the purple #422, Walt Dalrymple Jr. #J21 and Anthony Duvernois’s #55 fifth.
The next ‘racing event’ will be July 8th for the “Night of Fire” Maximum Destruction with fireworks.
Also, in the coming weeks, Lantern Fest will be Saturday, June 10th and the Stampede at the City Rodeo will be Friday through Sunday, June 16th, 17th and 18th.
